I now rent an apartment situated on a 20 acre lot just inside the limits of a large town/small city. The landlords are hunter-friendly.

City ordinances dictate that firearms cannot be discharged within 300 yards of an occupied dwelling without the permission of the owner. Using Google Earth, I found that there is no place on the 20-acre plot where I am 300 yards away from an occupied dwelling. I found a spot that is 286 yards away, though :cuss:.

There are deer galore around here and they are supremely unwary. It wouldn't be hunting so much as harvesting free-range livestock.

Unfortunately, I don't have the funds to get set up with a bow or crossbow before the season starts.

Just a thought (not sure if it would work), by 'landlords' do you mean the owner of the property? If so, do you only need their permission, or does 'owner' also refer to tenants for the purposes of the city ordinance?

My idea was to use a nice heavy load of buckshot, limit shots to 25 yards or less, and shoot from an elevated blind. The lot is fairly heavily wooded, so any potential bounces would be absorbed in short order.

By landlords, I do mean the owners of the property. It's clear that they would have no problem with me killing some deer on their land (especially if I cut them in some tenderloin).

However, in order to discharge a firearm legally, I would have to get permission from roughly five home owners. Attempting to do so is just too awkward for this introvert.

Don't know where you're at, but around here it's not hard to find a "workable" crossbow or compound for about the price of a couple of deer tags.

And I don't even stop at garage sales.

Check craigslist, ebay, etc. Bows loose value quicker than a new car driving off the lot. you really can pick up something decent for next to nothing. It wont be the latest and greatest but people have been killing animals with wood and sinew for quite some time.
