Okay Fella's You haven't failed me yet! SO, I have a question for you about a rifle stock, that SEEMS to have been coated with something. Its an Interarms Mark X and it has a sort of gray lining. From what i know these stocks came in either wood, or black synthetic. This one is old because its in 7.62x39, and they didn't make it very long so I'm assuming there's wood under there. Am i wrong in assuming that? The person who (maybe?) coated this stock did a VERY good job, there's no inconsistencies or anything... it looks factory. But i dont think the factory put them out like this... Anyways... ill attach a picture. (ITS THE GUN IN THE MIDDLE) does anyone know if this stuff can be taken off? And if it would completely damage the gun in doing so? The finish is like a light sandpaper. so it has grip, but isnt what i would call abrasive...

any help, would be well... helpful :) thanks...

Id really like to see this thing in wood form again.

I can't tell from your photo. Take the stock off and scratch some of the paint off on the inside somewhere that it won't show. If it is wood it shouldn't be too hard to strip and refinish it. If it is synthetic, you'll know. I'd probably leave it as is, especially if it has cheap wood underneath.

If you remove the recoil pad or pull the action out of the stock, you should be able to tell if it is wood or synthetic. If it is wood you can strip it, if it's synthetic, you can sand it down but you won't get the original finish.

If I strip Ill have to refinish though right? The interarms guns in the 80's has nice wood on the stocks... I dont mind refinishing, but i was wondering if its a finish that sort of floats over the original would and could be maybe peeled off and cleaned to look original? or if it was chemically bonded... Anyone know?

I think it looks great just like it is. Accuracy is far more important than the color of the stock so if it shoots good as is leave the finish alone. Bubba has refinished a lot of good looking stocks!

It looks like fleck stone spray paint. My guess is the last owner wanted to cover up a well done old stock.

I don't think that there is any synthetic stock made which is solid. So removing the butt pad and seeing a solid or hollow stock staring back at you will provide the answer if you can't tell from some of the other options. If it's solid then it's almost certainly wood under that finish. Scraping away some of the finish on the face for the butt pad will tell you if this is the case.

If it is a wood stock and the top coat was not bonding well then it would already have chipped and peeled away. It does not appear that this is the case so it most certainly is stuck down well and you will need to use a stripper of some form and re-finish the wood.

It may be that the original wood, if it is wood, was badly damaged with chips and hunk missing. Or perhaps the stock ended up broken and repaired and has nasty looking filler to feather in the repairs for such damaged areas. It may well be painted wood but you won't know if it was painted for a good reason or not until you strip the paint away. And if you find such repairs then you'd likely want to paint it again. Not to say that this IS the case. Some previous owner may just have wanted a darker synthetic look. But painting is certainly one way to cover up ugly repair spots where nothing else will make it look good again. So if you go ahead be prepared for a possible disappointment.

Are you sure that's not a bell and carlson carbelite stock? Looks like one on a mini mkx to me. mini mkx is the same gun as the charles daly mini mauser, the remington 799, and I forget who is importing them now. If it is a b&c, that's a $200 stock. The mini mausers all come from zastava, and stocks are easier to find than they used to be. boyds makes a semi-inlet one. for 75 http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/product.htm?pid=6999

but I would just leave it or buy this one http://www.e-sarcoinc.com/interarmsminimarkxstocknewfromthebox.aspx and be done with it.

If mine wasn't left handed I would buy it off you. Never seen a stock that was a true drop in fit. Probably needs to be bedded.
