While not trying to break the bank while also realizing that going too cheap means you get what you pay for. My Truglo optic while nice the battery died in like 3 weeks without it being left on :/ I'm prepared to buy a new optic one with a little more magnification, also the ability to be used without battery power is desired. I find this one to be pretty cool but I'm not sure its expensive enough to be worth it.

Also It seems when i look at reviews some of the scopes are only good for .22 how would one be sure the scope they are getting wont snap under the pressures of 5.56?

Primary Arms has nice affordable red dots and 1-6x scopes

Nikon M223 or P223 1-4x or Nikon Prostaffs with the 223 BDCs.

Weaver Classic 1-3x

With either a Burris PEPR or Primary Arms mount will be a very affordable set up.

Any basic 1-4X scope will work. I like the Leupold VX-1 @ around $200

Weaver 1-3x is good

I love my Burris TAC30 1-4x, for a nice sub $300 scope that has great illumination and a nice bullet drop compensating reticle.

FYI, Optics Planet is running an 11% discount store wide right now... I just ordered a Weaver 1-3x myself for my deer rifle, and it came out to right at $140 shipped. That is a great deal.

+1 for primary arms. I have their 1-4x and its a great scope. Pretty bright, tough as nails and holds zero with no problems. It has a fairly small fov but once you get used to its pretty easy to bring your rifle up with a good sight picture.

I've got and so far am very pleased with my Nikon P-223 3-9x40 scope. I'd definitely go that route over anything Chinese-made. I got the scope and SSALT mount from SWFA for $200.

What are you wanting to use it for? Home defense? Plinking? Hunting? I could throw out a bunch of decent scopes at fair prices, but many of them could be poor choices for what you need.

For quick shots out to 200 yds-or-so, I use the Bushnell trs-25, which is almost identical to the Primary Arms red dot.

For distance shooting, I prefer more magnification than you guys have mentioned. I have a 5-15x 40mm mil dot mounted on one of my ARs.

Have a Burris Signature 8-32x44mm on my varmint AR.

I don't ordinarily cheap out on optics. That said, one of the best $100 scopes I've found is the Optisan Mamba 1-4x24. The reticle is a circle dot with illumination, the glass is very clear with minimal distortion around the edges. SWFA usually sells it with a mount as a combo deal. I bought it after some folks over at the 'Hide spoke well of it. I figured if it didn't work out, I could always sell it. It's still riding on one of my sticks.

I want something for home defense, but with how terrible the batteries seem to last I wanted something with a reticle that exists without batteries and can just be enhanced if i do have them.

But I'd also like something with some zoom so I can eventually try my hand at some long range shooting.

You get what you pay for.

If it's an HD gun, don't go cheap.

Save up and get an Aimpoint PRO...that's my advice.

If you want magnification for other purposes (you don't want it for HD) then add a magnifier behind it.

For the typical home defense engagement range you don't need any fancy optics. Just put the front sight post on the target and you'll be fine. Get comfortable with the weapon and making hits on targets out to 25m without using any sight is pretty easy.
