Fellow deer hunters what gun are you using for deer season

1942 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30. Winchester 180 grain softpoints. No frills, no glass- just irons and a few little tweaks of my own.

Bloodied Rock River AR-15 opening weekend on Runnels County whitetail. Used 64-grain Win softpoints that Leon Carr put together for me. All chest shots at shots 100 yards or less. Complete penetration on 2 out of 3. Deer ran between 25 and 50 yards and were easy to find. Meat for freezers.

Will probably go back to Remington 700 in '06 for hunting wheat fields - quite lush for a change. Also need to bloody a semi-new Mossy 12 gauge before extended season ends mid January.

I will be carrying my Ruger #1 in 7x57 this season.I finally got it shooting small groups after several years of working with it.We will be stalking the Sandhills in the morning.

Since my daughter jacked my .30-06 this year, I had to shoot my deer with my old .30-30 Marlin 336. If I get a shot at an elk I hope it's close.........

Southwest, Laclede county specifically.

Last weekend was my first weekend out this season. I hunted with a JP Sauer model 202 Forest chambered in .308 with Doctor Optic 3x9.

I took this buck at 250 yards and this pig at about 170 yards.



Next weekend out will probably be an AR-10 with Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20 scope and the Savage Hog hunter with Thunderbeast 30P1 suppressor and subsonic .220 grain bullets for critters at 100 yards or less.

Well, I posted earlier that I would be using a Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06 and she did the job just fine. She barked twice Sunday and I now have a freezer full of deer meat and there is one less bobcat around to kill off rabbits and eat quail eggs. Good day.

Yesterday afternoon, I noticed my scope mount on my CVA Wolf was loose. I brought it in and removed the scope and tightened things up with blue loctite this time. But, I need to shoot it to check sight in, so I took my main rifle, my stainless Remington M7 in .308, this morning. Only saw doe. This is my go to rifle when I don't want to take something else.

Sauer 202 Skan Euro in 6,5x55 with a Hawke Endurance 30 on top.
Couldn't get my Mini-14 to do what I wanted... (Yeah, I know, I'm not the first one.)
Next year it will be another scope. Or maybe another rifle if the gun-gods are happy)

I took my first big game animal ever on sunday! A 2x2 mulie with my Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 in 30-06

Got this buck with a Savage in .308 Winchester/Leupold 3-9X scope...Snake River north side.


About 200 yards. It's a 4x5-point mule deer. I used handloads with 165-grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. Hodgdon 4895 powder, Nosler brass and CCI primers.

A plain old Winchester 12 gauge pump with a smooth slug bbl and iron sites. The old beater shoots great. I've got two nice bucks, two years in a row with it. Hoping for another in a few weeks.
Here in Taxachusetts we're limited to shotguns. A lot of guys have been using single shot H&R's with a heavy rifled bbl and sabots. Next best thing to a rifle.
I keep using my old Winchester and for the short distances I shoot it's been fine.

I've always wanted to harvest a deer with darker antlers like that but most I've ever seen have had a white rack.

You guys get another prop for using a suppressor too!!!

Holy crap on a cracker doubleA. What a first deer. That rack is cool on so many levels. Dark chocolate colored antlers, a split G2, stickers on the left side. Lots of green at the base where he's been rubbing trees. Just awesome.

Remington 700 BDL .30-06 where legal.
Winchester 1894 .30-30 where legal and in thick woods
Mossberg 5500 MkII 12 gauge and buckshot where rifles are not legal.

Need to pick up a muzzle loader...because where center fire rifles and slugs are not legal, muzzle loaders often are.

I have two rifles that I use:

Marlin 336CS - .30-30 with a 160 grain bullet for woods, heavier cover
Savage 110 - .30-06 with a 150 grain bullet for open fields and places where
I might take a longer shot.

I think I'll take out the trusty Marlin 336 in 30-30 to start this year. Most of the shots in my area are less than 100 yards. I hoping for my second deer (can't blame me for wishful thinking!) to take my sporterized mauser chambered in 30.06. I know the 06 isn't ideal for my particular area but I really want to give it a try this year.

What are you talking about? A .30-06 is always ideal.

My third deer last year was shot at less than 10 yds with an .06.
Momentum let her get about another 10 yds.

I've shot a lot of deer with my Rem 760 pump .06 ( $149.95 in 1976) and never shot a deer over 100 yds.

The .06 is just fine.
I do have that Marlin 336 in 30-30 as well.

Nothing special but I have to tell someone. My new rem 700 270.
First animal with my own hand loads. Must say I was proud to pile her up right where she stood.

I'm going scopeless for deer this year. A couple of years ago I picked up a Marlin 336C in .30-30 for $159, I think. It was absolutely beat to hell. I cleaned it up and rebuilt it and added an XS rail with the ghost ring. It's shooting Federal 170 grainers at about 3 inches or so at 50 yards which is way good enough for me and where I hunt. My backup will be a 1946 Mosin M44 with either Wolf or Seller & Bellot 180 grain soft points.

I also just built an AR-15 carbine in .300 Blackout, but sadly, we can't legally hunt with semi-autos in PA. I'm hoping to take some hogs with it down south next year sometime though.

As always, my bear rifle will be a Marlin 1895M in .450 Marlin with a Nikon Omega 3-9X40.

A .50 caliber and/or a .54 caliber muzzleloader.
