I have an 1850 3rd model Dragoon clone and I am looking for a modern holster.

Which modern revolver would be the closest fit? I’m not looking for a molded holster, just something that will fit the Dragoon when I go hiking or quad biking.

In other words, I want to be able to go to a gun show or store and ask if they have a holster that will fit "X" revolver without having to explain that it is really for my Dragoon. "X" revolver/Dragoon = same or similar fit.

Thanks - Jerry

Check with CraigC. He makes great looking holsters.

That's a fine looking 3rd. How do yoi like the conversion ?

45 Dragoon

The 1850(?) Dragoon, I think we're talking about the same revolver as in 1848 3rd Model Dragoon, but they are big revolvers and not much modern can hold it. I second what 45 Dragoon said CraigC will fix you up with exactly what you need. Where I've looked everyone else has only period correct holster nothing modern like what you're looking for.

45 Dragoon, I love the conversion. I shoot the conversions a lot more than the cap and ball. What’s nice is you can shoot both modern powder and black powder cartridges. I will check CraigC, but I'm not really looking for a western style holster, as I already have one. I want something more practical when I'm on the move. And I figured if there was a modern pistol that compared size wise, it would be easier hunting down the right holster.

Crawdad1 you got me thinking and I had to check the box that my Dragoon came in! It said 1850 and after an internet search, I found both dates 1848 and 1850 mentioned when referring to a 3rd model.

I had no problem finding a modern holster for my 1851, but the Dragoon is so much bigger. Hopefully someone will point me in the right directions.

Another suggestion would be a 1849 Pocket with the 4" barrel and R&D cylinder for 32 S&W short. A sweet little revolver for snakes and other such critters and vermin.

That is on the list!! ... in the future!

Oh, maybe I'm wrong then, Tembo, I always thought it was referred to as the 1848 Dragoon, my fault.

I think CraigC also builds modern style holsters, doesn't he?

Just for the heck of it, The Whitney's and 1st Mod.s were of 1848 vintage, the 2nd's came out in '50 ( along with the "safety pins" and slotted hammer face), and the 3rd's came out in '51 and ran till '61. Also, supposedly Saml Colts fav.

45 Dragoon

P.S. tembotusk, Mine are dedicated and tuned for cartridge only. It's a real pain for me to shoot B.P. where I live. I'm assuming that is an Army San Marco ? (rear sight gives it away. Loved mine)

BPH, Thanks for the lead on the Redhawk. That is one big pistol. The dimensions appear similar, so I'm sure a holster for a Redhawk should work. I’ll take a look at one in person next time I’m at the gun show or shop.

45 Dragoon, yes it is a Army San Marco. Now I need to raise the front sight. My Walker shoot something like 12 or more inches high at 20 yards, the 3rd Model with the rear sights in the lowest setting makes the pistol shoot like two feet above point of aim!

Thanks Crawdad1, I'll check CraigC's website. I've heard he makes very nice holsters.

I really don't think a Dragoon is going to fit properly in a Redhawk holster.

Define "modern". In field use, the California Slim Jim is a very practical design. The very first holster I made was a Californian for my 3rd Model Dragoon. The Threepersons is about as modern as I get and the only real advantage is that it rides a little higher.

Define "modern".

CraigC, "modern" means a current in production revolver.

I don't really know what kind of holster I want, however, I do believe I will know it when I see it.

When I ask the salesman: "Will that holster fit my pistol?" He will ask: "What pistol do you have?" I don't want to answer: "1850 Colt Dragoon." I want to answer whatever current in production big bore revolver name that might be close enough in dimension to my Dragoon.

My intended use is hiking, 4x4 and motorbike/quad riding. I understand the Dragoon is a very big pistol to carry while hiking and most likely the pistol of choice will be my 45Colt 1851 sheriff model. But, the Dragoon could make a nice bike pistol with the right holster!

tembotusk,

I have a modern style leather holster for a Walker which fits my 2nd Model Dragoon - except for the fact that the holster is longer than the pistol barrel by 1.5 inches. I was going to cut it down but lost interest.

Let me know if you are interested - how about $20? - I will be back in the US from next Friday (11/15) and can ship it after that.

Thanks Guys for all the help! I think I have found my answer. The Redhawk is not an exact fit but may work as a size comparison.

Tejicano: Thank you for the offer. I'm not ready to purchase a holster yet. My goal with this thread was to find information on a current production revolver that compares in size to a Dragoon.

Whatever it is, it ain't gonna fit right. Baffles me that somebody would buy a holster made for a double action for their cap `n ball revolver when they could have one made specifically for their sixgun.

what i was thinking too, its gonna be a crap shoot at that point finding one that fits "okay", be some trial and error id suppose. personally would make me nuts if it didnt fit just so.
You could always make one yourself too! worked for me :)
Best of luck to the OP
Gene

Thanks for all the ideas!

I think my best step is to just find a holster I like as an example for my needs and than talk to Mr. CraigC or other holster makers on the forum and see if they can make a custom holster to fit. A good holster maker will make it look right and fit right.

IF they have a model gun to fashion it.

Now you are on the right track.

That is too nice a gun to compromise on the leather. A work of art needs a good frame, don't you know...

Hmmm... FIRST Model Dragoon!
