been thinking as i wait to order a new (better) nipple wrench to get two stuck factory nipples off my 1860... How often did the original owners of say an 1860 remove the nipples (cones)? or did they? i googled antique nipple wrench and didnt get much. Anybody here have an original wrench? seen one?

Gene

PS ive been through alot of the nipple wrench threads, good reading
still havent decided which way im gonna go with it, my wife just had surgery so its got everything sideways right now, appreciate any advice on the best bang for the buck!

Best of luck to your wife!

I don't know how they used to do it, but these days we have Kroil and other penetrating oils. While it's soaking order a ratchet-style nipple wrench by Ted Cash, or Pedersoli makes a tough one - looks like a cross and the four points have a screwdriver and the three common sizes of nipple.

See http://possibleshop.com/s-s-nipple-wrench.html#cbnipplewrench

The ratcheting ones are the right type and the Pedersoli is at the end.

Colt supplied a blued steel combination screwdriver and nipple wrench with every New Model Holster Pistol (1860 Army revolver) sold to the U.S. government. They were also standard in cased sets for civilians.

The "screw driver and cone wrench" was priced at 42 cents, out of the total price for pistol and appendages of $24.

Hope your wife feels better soon! Try using a 50%/50% mix of ATF (auto trans fluid) and acetone to soak the threads. Use this OUTDOORS! When they do come out, use a little Never Seize on the threads before reassembling. Try contacting Phil at S&S Firearms in Queens, N.Y. for a wrench. Good luck! Bob
