Is it real or fake?

As soon as the description starts out "I don't know much about ..." I'm unsure you even need to look at the pictures.

Fingers, you already know that I have no expertise in this area, but the plum color looks fake to me...a bit too uniform. It looks like something I would do!!

Also, the cylinder notches are truncated cones rather than rectangles. It does not appear to be close-up distortion...it looks like those notches are cut differently than what I am used to seeing.

Did original Colts have cylinder notches shaped like that?

I dont know much about the gun and i dont know much about guns but i do know

7-1/2" barrel
action is tight
nipples were replaced
shot 200 times
only used 3F powder
2 screws on the side
.44 caliber
octigon barrel
frame is made of steel not brass like the cheaper ones
walnut grips
1-32 twist on rifeling
never been fired oh wait only 200 times i mean
always used hopes #9 to clean it
built by a guy who was 6 foot 3" tall and lived in a green house.

It might be real who knows?

On the left is the GB "1851 NAVY COLT".
On the right, a real "SCARCE CASED COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER" that sold for $57,500 in March.

Looks like stippling over the frame location where the Italian proof marks used to be.

As long at it shoots, it is worth about $50.00.

Ha! Little you all know... By the same method of obvious deductive reasoning used by Monty Python uncover witches...As you can see, the Ferrari horse and the Colt Pony are nearly identical. This shows that Colt's are the same as Ferrari's. Therefore, Colt's are Italian and the gun for sale is genuine.

The 1851 .36 Navy did not have a rebated cylinder, as Jim Watson noted. The 1862 .36 Pocket Navy did but it only had five shots.
My Whitney has a plum brown frame but it's made of iron.
Check the feedback on the seller.

Like pohill I too looked at the sellers rating, but I initially only looked at the A+147 part. I understand that once in a while you're gonna get nailed by a customer who just can't be satisfied. The problem is this person seems to get nailed A LOT!! That, and his responses to the bad ratings are rather telling as well.

I put a "watch" on the listing just for entertainment purposes but given that it's only got two days left I'd be surprised if it even gets a opening bid.

BTW fake and not a real good one at that. If you're gonna de-farb and refinish the least you can do is to go out and shoot the snot of the thing to at least make it look reasonably old.

One of the GunBroker complaints I ran across.

Gun was obviously refinished! Seller insisted it wasn't and would'nt allow me to send pictures to Turnbull or other experts for their opinion. I am totally unsatisfied. Larry Potterfield, MidwayUSA
Response: (left on 1/24/2012) I HAVE ALL YOUR E-MAILS AND NOT ONCE WAS YOUR CONCERN ABOUT FINISH IT WAS ABOUT MECHANICS.PREVIOUS OWNER STATED"OLD PERIOD NICKEL FINISH ITS IN DISCRIPTION ALSO AS IS NO RETURN POLICY.WITH S&W LETTER

I have to wonder who has more credibility.

Really? All you have to do is look at the unfinished metal where the serial# is stamped to know it isn't a Colt product!!
