So what youre saying is the bottom one isn't as versatile. Not to mention, you can vary the powder load/bullet weight from shot to shot without reliability issues. You're very observant!!

You could have put a German broomhandle Mauser pistol between them to fill in the 50 years after the civil war.
 
But what about 100-200 years from now what will the guns look like and how will they look at the bottom one?
 
What Hellgate says. A broomhandle between them would bridge the 100 year gap.
