I have 2 Colt Gov'ts One 1991A1 one Gov't Enhanced from mid 90's. I love em to death. 45 is getting expensive to throw at paper (I will reload in the future). So this gives me an excuse to get a 9mm (and yes it is just that "an excuse). I wanted to stick with American, its hard I tell you. Well here are my top 5. And yes I am a hypocrite most aren't American.
Purpose: to hit paper accurately, carry occasionally, to have a good sidearm in a tactical situation, to be a desirable used firearm.

1. Springfield XDM 4.5 Barrel Bi-tone (yes made in Croatia)
2. Beretta 92 INOX (hey! made in USA)
3. Ruger SR9
4. Rock Island 2011 Tactical Hi-Capacity (It's a 1911 I'm partial)
5. CZ 75 Stainless.

Opinions?? I'll take them all. Thanks.

Here I go again!

The Sig Sauer P226. 9mm is very accurate and super fit and finish!

Be safe and Merry Christmas!

I don't get the whole American-Croatian thing. Anyway, I'd take a look at a glock if you're interested in a striker fired gun. All of the guns on that list are nice; which one feels best in your hand?

I know you are partial to 1911s, but I wouldn't be thrilled with the Rock Island. Save 1911s specially for .45acp. ;)

I realize the SR9 is a good gun, but it doesn't thrill me, either. Ironically, all of the safeties make me nervous.

That leaves the Beretta 92, CZ75, and XDM 4.5...

My favorite of those 3 is the XDM 4.5. That's largely personal preference, though, as I prefer to not have a manual safety, and it is the most comfortable to me. (The CZ75 is too big for my hands... Not for me)

Also, I find buying American to be highly overrated... and Croatia is a great country with great people, and I'm glad they get to participate in the manufacture of high-quality firearms. Now if they were made in France or Germany... that would be a whole different story. LOL

Of those listed, I like the CZ75. Now if I were to choose an all around good 9mm it would have to be the Glock 17/19.

This really is a good question, unfortunately, there is really no one good answer. It is very difficult to get ONE gun to do all the things you would like it to do.

I have tried, believe me, and have been through a good number of side arms...and ended up having to have more than one.

Of the ones on your list, the only one I would consider would be the XDm. There seem to be after market triggers and barrels for it, so, if you want to take it up a notch at the range, you could. It is slim enough for CC. And big enough, along with having a light rail, for HD.

That said. I too would second the SIG P226. It is just the single best 9mm ever designed. The downside to the SIG is that you really cannot get the trigger to be match grade and while there are some good after market parts, they tend to be few and far between. Expensive also. Finally, it is a full size gun. Unless you are a full sized guy, it would not be the first choice for CC. And...it is too expensive to be a truck/car gun.

SO....I am going to recommend a Glock 19. It is big enough to be a very good HD gun and a very accurate range gun. Slim and light enough to CC. The best thing about this gun is the amazing array of after market parts. You can literally remake this gun into anything you want. A race gun, range gun, super hi cap HD gun, melt away CC gun. You can get the trigger to 2lbs with a drop in trigger kit. Trick it out with a pretty inexpensive match grade barrel and compensator (which you would remove for CC). And, at $550 for a new Gen 4 model, you can throw it in your car and forget about it...until you really need it...and then, no matter how long its been....it will be 100% reliable.

I hasten to add, I am NOT a huge Glock fan boy. My fav side arm is my SIG 226. But, the Glock does some things and goes some places the SIG will not.

So, unless you want a traditional all metal gun, or a true range gun, I would compare the XDm 4.5 with the G19 and go from there.

Hope this helps

Best

I have a sig P226. Just the basic model with contrast sights. I like that gun. My hunting partner shoots a Glock 34. He has a hard time with the DA trigger on the Sig. I put a short reset trigger in mine recently - that is a nice setup.

They are not easy to come by, but Sig makes a .22 conversion for the P226 that includes bbl, slide, and a magazine. Takes literally seconds to convert the gun over to .22. I'm thinking seriously about looking for one.

I would pick the CZ, though I wouldn't want to CC it . The compact CZ's are very good at punching paper and CC . One of those would be my choice for a do all pistol .

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm curious why the S&W MP9 is not mentioned anywhere here. Does it have a bad rep? It's on my short list, together with the SR9, and a Sig that I can't afford.

OP, I know you have narrowed down your choices, but I will throw my 2 cents in. I am currently in search of my next 9mm and it came down to Glock 19 and Walther PPQ.

PPQ will be my next purchase. I already own a Walther and I could not stomach the stock trigger on the 19, the Walther is just so much better and can be found for not much more money. Its a bit bigger but it feels just right in my hands. I have large hands and feel is important.

I'd take the CZ 75B. I'm not crazy about stainless or bi-tone pistols but that wouldn't change my selection. Of those on your list, the CZ 75B seems like a no brainer, IMO. Very accurate, reasonable carry piece, superb sidearm in a combat situation, and very desirable on the used market.

Now if we weren't constrained to your list, I'd recommend a Glock 19. All the same attributes but easier to conceal.

CountZero, This list is a product of my preferences which are as all over the place as me. I like AR's but prefer old school wood-stock battle rifles. You say 1911 to me I say "Colt". 9mm I think capacity, my first instinct was Browning Hi-Power Carbon Fiber limited edition. Anyway, I wanted capacity, quality, and the ability to put the bullet where I aim it. My other handguns are all blue or black so I want a shiny one. And yes I know shiny is not tactically sound. I guess this is more or a fun-firearm. But if needed with 15 or more rounds of 9mm when the fun stops it will be useful. I guess I'll just have to work down that list. LOL Because they all look pretty, and I have handled the XDM, the Sig, and a Ruger (.45 though) Oh great and now someone throws the Springfield RO at me. Not making this easy.

Low-end STI 9mm, perhaps? Not because I know anything about them, but because I want other people to try them out first (though I've heard nothing but them being very nice guns with very giant slide rollmarks :D)
