sorry file is a bit big.

It's my grandfather's old K98. I wanted to do something with it without making any permanent modifications. So I put in a new trigger rather than the creeping unpredictable original one and installed a no-drill scout scope mount. I put a Red dot on it and now I use it for close range driven hunts.
works quite well actually. The only problem is that I can't bring myself to taking it out if there is the slightest chance of rain.

@Biohazard:
the chain afaik holds a small metal rod that blocks the cartridges from spilling out of the loaded magazine.

Of the 5 military rifles I own, 3 have been sporterized, and that's only because that's how they were when I found them. My stock Kar98k and Mosin Nagant will remain as complete as the day I bought them. I have a 1926 Spanish Mauser that some dropped into a rather nice looking "sporter stock" though it has no stain or varnish at all on it, they did take the time to reattach the steel butt plate and original sling mounts. My No. 4 Mk I Enfield had the barrel and stock cut short into a sporter with everything else left original. Apparently my Great Grandpa bought it and 2 others exactly like it in 1950 for $10....total. Finally, my project gun is a 1918 Gew. 98 that someone literally put in a chop saw, but was nice enough to reattach the front sight right where the front barrel band went, so they just cut a slit in the barrel band and put it back on.

I traded into this 1942 Remington 1903 a couple of years ago. Bubba had attacked it, but apparently grew bored after cutting the stock and left the rest of it alone.

I just couldn't leave it like that so I did a bit of work on it:

On the swede restock I'm about 80% done. Metal is still being engraved and stock checkered but here is a sneak peek:

That stock is beautiful.:eek: I cannot find words to describe how different and elegant it is. I love the cap of the stock the most, I think it should be seen on more rifles :D

Years ago, I decided to build a powerful medium-bore rifle, not because I needed one, but just because I wanted one.
I bought a P-14 Enfield action from a buddy, ordered a barrel in .358, found a nice stock, bought a Timney trigger, a recoil pad and some other parts and sent it off to the gunsmith.
Since this was going to be a hunting rifle, suitable for elk, moose and big bear, I had it chambered for the .358 Norma Mag and specified a 20” heavy barrel. With a Nikko Sterling Nighteater scope, it’ll shoot MOA groups all day, or until the shooter has had enough. A 250 gr Speer at 2700 fps starts to ring my chimes after a dozen rounds or so. I loaded it down for hogs and deer, with a 180 gr slug at 2100 fps. The last hog weighed 170 lbs and is good eating.

Thank you! The antler tip was something that was in vogue in Austria at the turn of the century, you don't see it much now a days though. My goal in (re)building this rifle was to build something I can hand to someone to show everything I am capable of creating , a showpiece if you will. The raised cheekpiece is decidedly American and un-Bavarian as you can get , but its my creation though.

I've heard it said that rebarreling is a normal thing for a rifle.
Does anyone know the average costs for rebarreling, prefit or blank barrel, if any good gunsmith can do it?

Also, what about checkering? Sorry for the novice questions.

'98 Mauser in 8X57 mm in cut-down military stock, barrel trimmed to 22 inches, bolt handle turned down, Williams receiver sight. Work was done on the rifle many, many years before I acquired it.
