It's looking likely that we'll finally be able to use straight wall cartridge rifles for deer hunting here in Ohio this year. In preparation I've already ordered an H&R .44 Mag w/22" barrel and scope mount. Does anyone have any experience/suggestions for a non-Chinese made scope that you like for such a rifle? I'd like to stay under $250 if possible. I'm considering the Leupold Rifleman 2-7x33. Ideas?

For awhile I had a Leupold 4X on my little 44 Mag carbine. Eventually went back to the open sights. Here is how I figured it. Depending on where in Ohio most deer you take are inside of 70 yards, even at 100 yards (about the extent of your effective range with a 44 Mag) a good quality 4X is plenty. I hunted mostly West Virginia and most were taken inside of 50 yards and the scope was more a hindrance than a help for me anyway.

I may consider that. I'd have to have sights mounted on it though. They don't sell them with irons. Might be cheaper to just mount a red dot on the scope rail than pay to have iron's put on.

realizing you specifically state non-Chinese made,...but I use an older 1x5 varible made by Tasco on a 16 inch barreled Winchester Trapper....works very well. Not much magnification needed for the distance you will use a 44... But the lower power allows me to quickly acquire target and reticle. Ymmv...good huntimg.

Mine had a Tasco 3-9 x 40 rifle scope of some sort on it when I bought it. I removed it, because it was so close to my daughter's eye, I was scared she'd hurt herself with it. Mounted a truglo red / green multi reticle sight. It was awesome, but NO magnification.

I recently mounted a bushnell banner 3-9x40 shotgun scope. 6" eye relief... under $100.00. I'm very happy with it.

Chinese/Japanese? IMHO I really like the Nikon offerings as in inexpensive , quality ,shooting optics.
I own SEVERAL Nikons with NO problems .

Simmons has a very nice scope for less than $200. Its "The Master Series 44mag " Mine that I have is 6x21x44 and is crystal clear and has great reviews.

Man, I forgot about that. Never thought I would see the day but here we are. Hard to find a good rifle anymore that actually comes with sights. I guess I would just scope it and be done.

i went thru several scopes on my ruger 77/44 before deciding on a 2x7 leupold, its not very big and light weight to boot. i have killed several deer with it and they were one shot kills at less than 100yds with double lung thru&thru shots with 240gr hornady hp bullets at 1700fps. i hunt in a area of over grown sink holes with some openings that can be 100-120 yds and with the 2x7 leupold i am ready for close(2x) to a little longer(7x) shots, and with 7x you can shot thru little openings in the brush. and used leupolds can be had in ex condition for 150.00 or less and have a life time free service.eastbank.

Another vote for the Leupold VX-1. But I'd be just as happy with a quality fixed 4x. Nice setup, eastbank.

A shotgun scope may be just the ticket. You may find that a scope designed for a rifle cartridge may not be adjusted for parallax at the ranges you plan on hunting at.

Most likely so. I've used a Zeiss Conquest shotgun scope (1.8-5.5x38, turkey plex, 50yd parallax) on my Deerfield carbine for a few years now and it's a pretty much ideal combination for hunting. Perfect up to 100yd and sufficient up to 150yd or so, which seems to be the practical limit for the caliber.

Had the same question on a Marlin 357 lever action. I settled on the rimfire Prostaff fixed 4X. The parallax is about right for a pistol cartridge carbine, it's not expensive, the image is seriously bright, distortion is little to none, and as far as I know, you can't bust 'em.

I've got a couple of the top end Simmons scopes mounted, and can hardly stand them. The image is bright alright, but has severe barrel distortion. Point the rifle at a nearby hill and move your head left and right, and the hill seems to slump away, left and right. Don't do that when lining up on a trophy elk, or you'll be laughing so hard you can't shoot.

Redfields Revolution series is American made and there 2-7 would make a good scope on it. I have a 2-7 revolution on mine on my H&R 44 mag. Lets you pick a shot thru the branchs at close range a red dot or open sight can do and shoot at even 50 feet.

Leupold is not all American made.
Avoid the redfield revenge series like leupolds green ring scopes, they are NOT made in usa but made in asia somewhere.

Good deal if you have a weaver base??

I put a Leupold 2x7 on my 357 Henry Big Boy and I think it's perfect. I picked the rimfire version cause of size and parallax is set at 60 yards. Every thing is in focus. Love the set up

I can't say more than what has been said already by several-Leupold VX-II,1X4.I have one on my Contender carbine in 35 Rem.,and it's a great little optic out to 200 yards or more.On the lower power, the field of view is huge, yet if turned up,it will easily out reach the rifle it's mounted on.With Leupold's quality and customer service, more value for your optic dollar will be hard to find.I hardly ever buy one new though. They still honor the lifetime warranty and sometimes I can save a bundle buying used.I have an even dozen of them, and some of them are on some hard kickers, and they take it with no problems.

I'm necessarily set on American made, just not Chinese. Not to hijack my own thread, but I have a problem with a country that is the home of the "reform through labor" prison factory system. I try not to support it if possible.
