So a few years ago I bought a m77 MK II. To not make this too lengthy, the previous owner painted the entire rifle in a camo pattern. The price was right so I just took it in stride. Well I am to the point where I'd like to get it back to the original condition. I recently purchased a factory synthetic stock from Ruger. My question is what would be the best way to remove the paint from barrel, floorplate and bolt handle? Obviously I don't want to harm the finish, which is blued. After hunting with it and carrying it some of the paint has chipped off, and the finish looks fine underneath. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

Aerosol oven cleaner works well at removing most painted finishes, it also doesnt harm the blue finish (I wouldnt leave it on too long though, just long enough to eat the paint). Ive used it to remove paint from rifles and finishes/cosmoline from stocks.

Hoppes and/or Gun Scrubber work well too, as long as the paint isnt one of the permanent ones, like Aluma Hyde II.

just remember most acids will remove gun blue, so do NOT use anything with acid in it. Even vinegar & lemon juice remove gun blue so beware..
I would try acetone, test a spot under the stock so it won't show if you use the wrong solvent

Most of the gun cleaning products should take it off, and not hurt the blue/finish.

If you use some fine (000-0000) steel wool sprayed or dipped in it, will help it come off faster, and as long as you dont rub hard in one place, wont hurt the finish either.

Some paints can be removed by soaking in Pine-Sol. I like Pine-Sol because it's non-toxic

Thanks for all the info guys. I now know to avoid using acid based
Cleaners. I think I'll try OOOO steel wool and some bore solvent first. If that doesn't work too well, I'll try the acetone. Thanks again!
