I recently bought a house on ten acres on the edge of a rural area. I was out after Church enjoying the beautiful weather we had on Sunday when I heard gunshots across the hill-it was music to my ears. I'll have a nice shooting range with that hill as my backstop.

It's beautiful out here and very quiet most of the time.

I am glad for you. Having your own place and able to shoot at YOUR pace is great! Its safer as well. Your ammo budget will be...stressed...just a bit. :D

Have fun1 I know you will!

Mark

Though I do not have enough property to have a range, I can function test my loads. Every neighbor around me shoots once in a while. Skunks don't stand a chance around here.

I am not doing to bad. During the winter I have irrigation pond for a pistol rang. It's about 10ft deep and 15 yards end to end. I can through pigeons out in the back no problem.

When my friend had his house built (5 acres way out yonder), the first thing he had the builder do was take the excess soil and build a backstop so he could have his own private range. Would love to have that kind of everyday convenience.

Welcome to the club! Having your own range is amazing. It will definitely stretch your ammo budget a bit. If you don't reload, you may want to think about starting!

and to have neighbors that share similar hobbies...

^^^This. Having other neighbors that shoot regularly means those that don't shoot have already been exposed to frequent gunfire. This is half the battle with a "home" type range. 10 acres is not that big of area and means neighbors may be close. In an area where neighbors are close and frequent shooting is not already being practiced, one can expect phone calls and a visit from local authorities. After having several "private" ranges on several different parcels....ask me how I know. Unfortunately, many folks buy their ten acres out in the country for the peace and quiet and gunfire interrupts that. To them, the sound of frequent gun fire does not sit well with them, especially if it bothers their dogs and they have children that play outside. I've found that checking to make sure there are no local ordinances against it, having a safe set up from the get go and informing those around you that your set up is safe and not to be concerned when there are gunshots, is a good thing.

Yes, welcome to the club, hk. We live on a small 15 acre farm and have our own 100-yard range. The wife and I were just this last weekend discussing improvements to it. (I've introduced her to the Hickok45 videos, and now she wants steel.) All but one of the neighboring farmers are shooters, and there's a sportsmen's club just up the road. There's someone shooting nearly every day in our area (not always me, unfortunately). It is, indeed, a wonderful sound. Enjoy!

You would have loved it at my place this weekend. Neighbors had family over and they brought out their full autos to play with. They own the land but allow me access to their range basically anytime I want. Unfortunately I was stuck in the house replacing the kitchen floor this time.

^ You'd better re-order your priorities. :)

Had my own 100 yd range when I had my farm. Great to be able to load five rounds and waltz over to the range and test them out.

One of Son2's and my greatest memories was when I wanted to get rid of all the pigeons in the barn. He was too young to handle a shotgun, but not too young to throw rocks at the barn to "flush" the pigeons.

Stood in the parking area with him next to me, I'd holler "Pull!" and he'd pitch a rock into the hayloft through the open doors. Out would come a pigeon or two and I'd blast it or them. Got ten of them that way, cleaned 'em and Wife1 cooked up the legs and breasts with lots of garlic.

Good eatin', shinin' times.

Terry

Welcome to the club. Having neighbors that shoot helps a lot. I'm also on 10 acres shoot every once awhile and the man that owns the land right next to us grow pines on it, he has talked about selling lots for houses, but also said he probably won't because the land behind us is a training center for military and LEAs. So yeah lots of shooting going on around here.:D

They will be back in a month or two. Neighbor actually saw me out doing some yard work on Monday and asked why I didn't come over and join in the fun. Have to say we got really lucky when we bought our house. Have great neighbors, in a good school district, out in the country with plenty of wildlife around, have my own pistol and archery range, nearly unlimited access to the neighbors rifle range, and only 25 miles to Huntsville.

I bought 31 acres in 2006. The back of it goes down to the swamp and the Cape Fear river in NC. I instantly had a 100 yard range and I can now shoot 200. I plan to stretch it out and can probably get 400 before I get wet. It sure is nice to walk out and shoot. I have always had a farmers field I could use but this is mine, at my house. I have never shot at at a gun range and I am 43. Dont need em.

Soon. Soon I'll be joining the club. That's my one stipulation when we're looking at houses or land. Until then, just color me jealous.
