I was watching Monday’s episode of Castle (The one where Beckett impersonates a Russian hit woman) last night. It wasn’t spectacular TV or anything like that but I did notice that the bad guys were all carrying Third Generation Smith and Wesson Semi Autos. Beckett was as well at one point although her gun became a Kahr mid scene.

Watching the episode I got to wondering do these people even recognize the quality they’re holding in their hands? I wonder how many of them can look at the gun and know it’s a third gen or even a S&W. I would guess that most of them probably didn’t even realize the gun in their hand was a Smith even though they were marked so.

I’m positive Stania Katic didn’t, she’s made her position on firearms pretty clear and she’s probably yelling for the prop master to “get this thing out of my hands.” as soon as she hears “cut”.

I've never understood a serious anti even taking a roll as a shooter in any show.

No, not really...$$$$ speaks with a loud voice. They'll do anything.

I doubt any anti-gun actor needs to worry about touching an "evil" gun. In many of the newer movies/TV shows, the guns either aren't real or aren't functional. Almost all the new stuff is shot digitally and the noise and muzzle blasts, as well as bullet strikes, will be added to the digital master by the "magic" folks. No more blanks in the guns, and no more explosive caps to simulate bullet hits. With the real dangers involved with real guns and blanks, it would be hard today to find an insurance company that would insure a production where real guns were being used.

And you know this as a fact, how?

During the 1990s, there was a shift to use airsoft and other replicas in lieu of using firearms with blanks. This was due to improved CGI (gun shot) effects during post-production, lower insurance requirements and lower crew costs (do not have to employ a full time armorer).

I worked as an assistant armorer for a prop company during 1994-1998.

I know the show The Unit used real guns setup to fire full load blanks. Many times on some shows they use half loads with a barrel restrictor built in.

We did a movie with a highway patrol/state police and they got real mad when the autoloaders would not cycle. The reloader we used out of Florida got the rounds mixed up and sent us half load blanks so we had to do a lot of quick cuts in editing to make it look like they were firing fast. Movie Magic!

Lots of productions still use real guns. Chandler Riggs (who plays Carl in The Walking Dead) was recently quite happy in an interview, because since he'd finally turned 14 they would allow him to use a real gun with blanks like the rest of the actors.

Prior to that because of his age he had been using a toy gun that they made up to look real and added the sound/blast digitally.

Daniel Day Lewis probably would have.

Shooting Gallery did an episode where they visited the production of Criminal Minds. They use props that have special cartridges that emit flash and smoke, higher tech flash paper guns if you will.

Antigun actors who play characters with guns are hypocrites. They sell out for the role. Also if they can't get into their role enough to understand guns if their character should, then they're not much of an actor. Oh well, what do you expect from someone who needs a writer to tell them what to say.

It is refreshing to hear of an actor like Joe Mantegna, who's served his country, been around guns all his life and still loves to shoot. It would be fun to interject more of this into his Rossi character in Criminal Minds. I'd like to see him take the kid, Dr. Reed, under his wing and say something like "get rid of that sissy popgun and get a real gun ...) then hand him a 1911 (or Glock or something else). :D

No doubt some do. What percentage that would be is anyone's guess, though.
