What is the general consensus on the Kimber Solo?

At the gunshow, over the weekend, I saw the new Kimber Solo Carry DC and was immediately taken over by how well it felt, the pull of the trigger, the night sights, and the overall appearance, . . . . . . . . . . . but not so taken over by the ~$900 price tag.

What has been the general consensus about the Solo? Have there been issues?

Opinions?

The only one I've actually had hands on time with couldn't make it through an entire mag without a failure to extract. Same failure every time with no consistency as to mag or round count. It would fire, the slide would cycle, and the next round would be rammed into the back of the empty still in the chamber.

Was a used gun at a local shop so possibly just an isolated event. Not a particularly confidence inspiring one though. :scrutiny:

shot more than 1 when they 1st became available and though highly of them...but for the price

i did buy a S&W Shield for ~1/2 the cost and it, aesthetics (a personal thing) aside, does the same thing just as well -- put bullets down range accurately and reliably.

I know they had teething problems when first introduced.. Haven't heard much negative talk beyond the unusual Kimber banter lately though...

Never shot one, but I agree with your assessment of how they feel! If it's reliable now, it would be a really nice little package. Pricey, but nice. Based on price alone, I wouldn't think they'd be very successful, but what do I know?

The early Solos had a LOT of issues.
I did a LOT of research before buying one. My deciding factor was that Crimson Trace laser grips are available for a Solo, whereas they aren't available for a Khar, Robar, ect.
Out of the box, mine was 100% reliable with good, defense ammo. Now that I have over 1K through it, it will run almost anything.
They are a S.O.B. to rack the slide, and sting a little when shot, but, are very accurate for such a little gun, and easy to carry.

I wish they didn't cost so much. As it is, . . . ~$900 is a lot to pay for a 6+1 gun that may or may not run smoothly. But that Carry DC is SO nice looking . . . . and even BETTER feeling [in the hand], . . . . in fact, I would even say, the BEST feeling small gun I've ever felt . . . . that it really tempts me. I would have to sell several of my guns to finance it.

You guys really have to start looking at slickguns.com, they have had them for $609.00 several times, and in stainless for $700.00. You don't have to pay a few hundred extra for these guns. When a user posts it, they also send you an email, I have seen every popular gun there in the last few months, every model Sig, the Glock 41 and 42, at below MSRP.

gym, . . . . I doubt I could get a Solo Carry DC [with night sights] for that price. But I will look at their page to see what they sell for there. Thanks.

Watching a Hickok45 video. He liked it but thought it was a lot more snappy than his Kahr CM9. I wonder why that would be?

The Solo was the gun that finally, after 2 previous problem 1911s, that finally made my friend say, "Im done with Kimber!". Actually, he didn't say it that nicely.

It says in the owner's manual to only use 124gr SD ammo, and specifically recommends Gold Dots, Golden Sabers and Hydra-Shoks. That includes for target practice as well. They can be a jam-o-matic with 115gr target ammo according to friends that had one and dumped them.

Shame. One of the best feeling small 9mm pistols I've felt. Gonna pass on it. Thanks for the input, guys.

As a RSO, I have seen a fair number of them come into our range. Some can be ammo finicky and others shoot everything. I think they are about equal with all small semi's from every maker, some can run perfectly, and others are more problematic.

I've owned one since December, & it's now been back to Kimber twice for extractor & firing pin failure. I'm selling it after I get it back. Nice to look at, but it's reliability has been lacking.

Fires every time you pull the trigger, no malfunctions. Only problem I have experienced is difficulty releasing magazine when fully loaded with Golden Saber. However, this problem is remedied by pressing upward on the bottom of the mag when pressing the mag release button.

Owned several Kimbers over the years; function always present but quality was hit and miss. If I got a good one, it was really good; if I got a questionable one, it haunted me until I rid myself of it. My experience was "spotty".

I said I was going to pass on one, but that may change soon. Saw one at Academy, over the weekend, for $860. Still too high in price, but again, the feel of the grip and the smooth trigger put it in a different class than other small 9mm pistols. If I can find one for cheaper, I'll get one. Then hope it won't be a problematic gun.

It's the "when using the recommended ammunition" that tends to turn me off on it. I don't have a lot of money and wouldn't want to burn through my relatively low number of defensive rounds just to break it in. Now, if I could get one that functioned well with 115 fmj, then it would be a game changer, but that seems to be a "tall order", as it were.

I will pass... To finicky when it comes to ammo... Very expensive... Many bad reviews on the internet... Ever Bill.45 Hickok will tell you not to practice shooting the Solo with regular, cheap, plinking ammo.
