Getting into some medium range shooting and trying to decide on caliber. I'm going with either a Savage 12LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor or a Savage 10FCP in 308 Win. I reload for 308 already and was really not wanting to add another caliber, but the Savage 12 LRP does not come in 308.

In regards to ranges from 500-1000 yards, which caliber between the two would best serve me? I think I already know the answer is 6.5 Creedmoor, but I want some folks opinions that know..

Which one bucks the wind the best?

During the panic times, will I be able to get projectiles for the 6.5?

During the "panic times" the first things that disappear are the common calibers, not the oddballs. 6.5 is a better long range caliber. Better ballistic coefficients.

I disagree. There will always be 30 cal bullets and ammo. Huge selection of bullets and wind bothers less with heavier bullets. I currently have very accurate loads with 150g ttsx barnes at 2940 fps with rl 15 and Winchester brass. And those are just for hunting. Put some vld bullets in the 308 and you cannot go wrong at long distance.

6.5 CM is definitely a better long range round than the 308. However the 308 is going to be easier to find. During the last panic I couldn't find 308 ammo or components for months locally. The oddball cartridges were still available.

6.5 will outshoot the 308 long range hands down. I boight my 6.5 and had years of expirience woth 308 and i could shoot better with the 6.5 immediately. 2 liter bottles @ 500 were simple.
You could always order some .264 bullets throughout the ammo crisis. If you had brass and powder you were set.
It will kill anything the 308 will and the recoil is negligible.
I was hitting jugs that I called as a miss!

Another vote for the Creedmoor and I have both. I reload and have always found 6.5 projectiles. I have a cousin that tells me that to this day the only stuff available in his area is 6.5 caliber.

260 Rem

I don't own the 6.5 creedmore. I have 4 260 Rem and 1 6.5x284 bullets have been more available than the .308 and I have 2 of them. I like the 6.5 x 284 and the 260 better than the creedmore a couple of reasons 1). Lapua Brass and 2). 140 grain bullets in 6.5 are the long range equivalent of 195 in .308 and they take up alot of space in the 6.5 Creedmore.

Now I must say I don't think there is much difference realistically between the creedmore and the 260 rem velocity wise. They make both in your choice I owned one of them and it shot just like all my other 260's 1/2 MOA is common from all of them except my skinny barreled 700 LSS Mountain.

Hornaday Brass is pretty lame IMHO.

In either case Good luck and shoot straight.

With the 260 Rem already around I can not believe they even came out with the 6.5 creed

6.5 Creedmoor brass is available from Hornady, Norma, and Nosler. Don't let the brass hold you back. I havnt had mine a long time but i have used the same forty Hornady brass Over and over for at least five reloads. I still have forty Factory rounds I havnt shot. I can do fine like that. You can get the Norma and Nosler for a little more dough and they may be better. I dont know because I have never boight just brass. I buy the complete rounds, shoot them, and then reload them. I dont competition shoot so I cant speak to that aspect, unless you count shooting against all your buddies! I really have all of them back at the drawing board after our last "competition" which was the first time They had seen the rifle. I hear the 260 is pretty much the same ballistically but I never had one of those. I would of had one years ago if I had known they shot this good!

I dont know how much credit to give the round or the rifle, but it definitely made a long range shooter out of a mediocre hunter.

It was my understanding that the 260 had more case capacity but the CM allowed the bullet to be further out so it actually gained more capacity than the 260 loaded with the 140's. I really dont know, but I do know if it shoots like the CM you cant go wrong either way!

Savage still makes the 6.5-284 right? Slightly more case capacity than 260 i think.

No, just no... Look it up, from various sources. They're all going to say the same I'm about to say. The Creedmoor was built with the 140s in mind. It handles them better than the .260 due to the case of the creedmoor being slightly smaller than the .260, so the bullet doesn't take up powder space like it does in the .260.

Btw, like has been stated there is now other Brass options for the Creedmoor, it's gaining in popularity. That's for certain. Besides if you really want Lapua brass, you can form 6.5 creedmoor brass from .22-250 and even .260 or .308 Brass. So if Lapua brass is a concern it can be had.

It would be easy if you had a savage 260 to have the throat made for your bullet of choice being barrel is so easy to take off. On a re-barrel job the maker will do the same, anyway what can the difference be 50fps?

Im seriously considering dumping my 22LR ammo stash to make this rifle purchase... Then I will beg and borrow for the scope... LOL

The hornady creedmoor brass is extremely nice, not worth paying for lapua brass for that round.

My vote is fore the Creedmoor too. I think the various wildcats based on the Creedmoor case will eventually be legitimized by the various makers over the next few years. I have been considering a 6mm CM myself.
