A fool and his money are soon parted.

It's still easy to find nice Mosins for well under $150.

Havnt you heard? These are rare antiques...:D Seriously though, Cabela's will horridly overprice some things, then vastly underprice others. Makes you wonder how detached their purchasing/pricing staff is from the real, current market values. I have spoken to their "experts" in the high end, high priced gun room. They know considerably less than I do across the board and I'm only 29, most of them are greybeards. I wouldnt knock them, except that its their job to know how much things are worth. If its your job, you should know better.

I think J&G is still selling them for about a hundred or so. Get a C&R licence!
The local Gander Mountain has them for $127 Retail.

LGS had 5 91/30's today - 3 in good condition, nice wood and finish for $179. Other 2 metal looked good, wood was so-so for $139. All noted full kit with sling, oiler, bayonet. So pricing is going up, but can still get ok deals. 54R cans $109 at same store.

$200 is ridiculous for a Mosin of any origin. I am glad I bought mine a few years back for $80. Speaking of Mosins I need to take mine back out to the range, I did not do so well with it last time.

Well not quite. For a basic 91/30 yes. For a Finn, M38, Dragoon, sniper, etc things are different. Finn Mosin's regularly sell in the $300-$400 region and M38's start at $200 and go up.

Jackal,

I wouldnt knock them, except that its their job to know how much things are worth. If its your job, you should know better.

No, Sir. It's their job to know how much folks will pay for them.

Large businesses are like that and seem to have become worse in recent years.

I buy from small businesses all I can. They are normally very fair with regard to prices.

Regards,

Josh

As others have said, you can still get them considerably cheaper. The big box stores seem to jack up the prices on them, although the MC Sports near me had them around $150 last time I checked.

Yeah, you can find them elsewhere for less money.

However, there were only 14 million (IIRC from T Lapin's book) made so that is only one for every 200 US citizens (approximate number), and we know that not every 91/30 was brought to the US for sale. And we know that some folks own a bunch, further skewing the ratio.

They will always be a collectable piece of WWII history, and they are all steel and wood which is hard to find at any price today.

Compared to other rifles of the era, $200 is underpriced due to a current market glut. When the source dries up, they will go up in price pretty quick. All the people hacking them up will feel like that was a huge mistake.

Nothing against the MN but, I'm not even a buyer at 150 much less 200. I'm more than content to let this piece of history pass me by.

Yeesh. Wish I'd picked up an M44 while they were still cheap and plentiful. Local store wanted $200+ for a specimen that looked like it had sat in a swamp for the past 50 years....
