Hey all, I lurk here way more than I post but I do have a few questions. I am looking to buy a 22/.410 over under because squirrel/bunny hunting is probably my favorite outdoor activity in the fall and I think that combination is cool/versatile. This would be a reward to myself for getting through my first year of pharmacy school and I will be spending some of the tax refund on it

Anyway #1. Since I already have a 22lr (marlin model 60) I was thinking of going 22 WMR, but would this be too much gun for squirrel/bunny? I am not opposed to going with a 22lr/.410 but I don't have the 22mag so there is some new/coolness factor to that combination for me.

2. I am doing some shopping around and I have two models picked out. I do have some criteria, I would like either double trigger or selector switch not a selector on the hammer like the savage 24. I would like to purchase new, this would be my first new gun and to me this is semi important. My only other criteria is that I hate the look/feel of synthetics and would definitely prefer wood.

I am looking at Baikal mp94

and Chiappa Double Badger if I decide to go 22lr

Any opinions about either gun? Or other models I haven't seen yet?

I am not looking at a savage 24 due to the selector on the hammer and they can be almost the same price used as either of those two guns new

Thanks for any/all advice!

Neither of those choices would be my preference over the Model 24. Consider a used one with the wood. Some are quite nice. Mine is .22 WMR over 20ga.

Thanks for the reply, I am not a huge fan of the hammer selector/external hammer guns in general. Does the 24 have a transfer bar/other saftey mechanism? (I believe the new savage 42 does)

Beautiful specimen by the way! Do you hunt with yours? I am a bit concerned about meat damage with the 22mag

Edit: I may end up buying over the internet so I am a bit concerned about buying used due to the fact I couldn't examine them for rust/damage/excessive wear in person, but I dont have that concern buying new

Milkmaster, good to see your 24 again. Mine is still going strong, too.

spazzy, the .22 mag is not overkill on squirrels if you favor head shots. My 24 is also a .22mag/20 and it's my favorite squirrel-gitter. Mine is scoped with a Leupold 1-4X scope, which makes head shots a lot easier.

I don't hunt as much as I used to. Everything is now full of subdivision housing too close to shoot a rifle much around here. But when I do get out away from it all and know I may be in the woods with a firearm, it is usually this 24 that goes with me. A gettin' gun for anything from birds to coyotes. It isn't like I don't have many other fireamrs to choose from when going, but the combo is hard to beat when you just don't know what you might be doing. Mine has a sling on it I use a great deal as well.

I've got a Savage 24 I bought used several years ago, its a dandy. Mine has the selector button on the side of the receiver, its a .22/410. I've seen these at GS quite often, $125 about average. Nice short and handy carrying rifle.

I thought model 24s were going for much higher, $450-600ish for average condition? That is why I was considering new.

I will definitely update when i purchase.

Anyone fondled the two guns i posted earlier? I can definitely get them new and in my price range ($450ish at the high end of my budget)

788HAM's model is like mine and my Dad's .410 models. My Dad's gun is actually the earlier Stevens gun with the "original" synthetic tenite furniture! haha :)

Mine pictured here has the wood furniture on it.

the new 42s dont have a xfer bar that i have found just a cross bolt safety. i have one(just picked it up the other day and havent shot it) but its light handy and works for what i wanted.(or should work, have to get to the range) its the 22wmr/410, i personaly love the 22wmr, fyi i dont believe the barrel is choked at all if that matters to you.

I managed to snag a couple of the Baikal mp94'S some time back for the wife and I. Mine is in .22WMR over 410,...hers is .22LR,....love them both for woods knocking for small game... a bit heavy,...but built like a tank. the .22wmr gives more "reach",...and the barrels have interchangeable chokes/ If you can find one,...get it. I tried the new Savage,....didnt care for the feel or looks of it.... ymmv
