I'm planning to visit friends in NY. Would it be smart to take guns?
All my guns is over 10 rounds. I'm not planning to CC in NY just to have it with me during drive from IL. Also I'm planning to stop in Boston and Rhode Island.
Any advises?

Might as well throw in a side trip to MD and DC and you'll have the worst places to have a gun in the country.
I think NY is prohibitive with a handgun if you plan to stop for more than gas and food.
I kept a Kel Tec carbine and 10 rd mags when I traveled to NY but I'm pretty sure that the mags had to be left unloaded while in the vehicle and the gun had to be cased.

I know this may go against the grain for many folks, but I believe it would be incredibly stupid to take a gun into NY state and even more stupid to take one into NYC. You can't claim Firearms Owner Protection Act since you are not passing through on your way to a destination where your gun would be legal, and it does not sound like you are going to keep the gun locked away and inaccessible at all times.

Leave the gun at home. Believe it or not, most areas of the country are pretty safe and you probably won't be attacked by thousands of screaming terrorists.

You cannot possess a handgun in NY without it being registered with the NYSP.

You cannot register a handgun with the NYSP without being a resident of NY.

Therefore, non-residents are not allowed to possess (read, POSSESS) handguns in the state of NY.

OK, I did think this is not good idea, but thank you for your inputs.
Appreciated.

Gunlawguide.com ....

If you travel often or want to carry firearms, Id buy the 2014 www.gunlawguide.com . Id also check the "Legal Heat" app. It's on iPhones & Androids. :D
As for NY, I wouldn't take any guns. Handguns will get you in hot water real fast. :uhoh:

No, you are entering the least-free state in the country. Remember in NY you are guilty until proven innocent if you have a firearm. Do not bring it into NY. Having lived in NY for 35 years I hardly wait to get out. Why not have your friends visit you, I am sure they would enjoy the freedom.

You could take your gun to the PA- New Jersey border. Leave the gun at a reputable gun shop on the PA side for cleaning . Pick it up on the way back. Proceed onward to Illinois.

That way you have a firearm the bulk of the trip.

I just did this in April when I needed to visit several Naval and Air Force bases in and around Pensacola,Florida ,all off limits to firearms. The gun shop in Pensacola was so hospitable they would not even charge me after holding the gun for 4 days.

Don't even think about crossing the Delaware and proceeding to NYC and staying there with a gun. Passing through, OK. Staying for days is an invitation to much trouble.

I've thought about using a safe deposit box as well. i bank with Wells Fargo and they offer great services at all their banks.

Consider bringing a pump shotgun in the trunk if you are just going to NY. As for boston you would probably still be illegal though. Dont know about Rhode Island. Overall best option is to leave at home unfortunately.

If he is not a resident of PA, how are they going to be able to "give" him his guns back? he would have to go through a BC and if he is not a resident, it won't happen.

Best to just leave them at home and go enjoy your trip

Cite that for me please. On a gun cleaning. :) And even if correct, there are other facilities. Take the gun to PA and back, I say.

A gun shop or repair facility has to log them in if overnight. To get them back he would have to pass a check, nut he is out of state - no different than pawning them for a week and trying to redeem them.

Be better off renting a safety deposit box at a bank; or still better just leave them at home

Not on a cleaning or emergency repair. Not everything has to go into the bound book! I told you that in post #10! You can be a load, load! :D Quite argumentative. But you are also certainly correct many times.

We just have to agree to disagree and go with the bank or locker. There, we agree. Hurrah! ;)

I'm pretty sure in CO. if the gun stays overnight it is supposed to go in the book, certainly that goes for pawn. I don't remember it that is due to some of the recent legislation or if it's federal.
I know for a fact it isn't always practiced but I'm sure it's the law.

That's not true: You don't need to fill out a 4473 or do a background check to get your gun back from being worked on or cleaned, even if they keep it overnight (at least not according to federal law; state laws may be different, of course).

I'm with everyone else: I wouldn't take any guns into states like NY, MA, NJ, MD, DC, etc. Even if it might be technically legal in some of those places, they're still so anti-gun that you might have issues with the local police if you get pulled over. And often they have a lot of little gun laws that are specifically designed to catch people who are otherwise following the law. I have a friend who lives in MA and he has a heck of a time following all the gun laws; they really make it as difficult as possible.
