Quick question guys - I just got an RCBS Rockchucker Supreme press to replace my old "C" frame Lee for single stage work (Brownells had a good sale on them to where after coupons, rebate, etc, the final shipped price was $109).

Anyways. I got it mounted and setup today, but was wondering if a very thin paintjob on these is normal. From a distance my press looks green, but when you get close the paint coverage appears very thin. On the textured surface only the "grooves" appear to be green with the raised areas silver. There's almost as much silver showing on the frame as there is green.

Generally I wouldn't mind, but I wouldn't want this thing to start rusting up on the uncovered spots.

Just wondered about this - thanks.

The RCBS equipment that I have bought recently looks like it is painted with one of the special paints that looks different in different lights and positions. It is green wit a silvery base/background.

Also, the paint is textured.

RCBS equipment is usually painted well but a bad one could always slip buy the QC process.

Rough cast and a rubbed paint job. Looks good to me. My rcbs pro2000 is the same, rust is not a problem here.

RCBS cast iron equipment is sprayed green, then highlighted (rubbed) with a silver paste on the raised surfaces. People used to pay extra for such two tone paint treatments.:) I've always liked the effect. You're the first I've heard of who thought the silver was bare metal showing through.

Back in the 70's when I bought my first Rockchucker they were painted with green textured (crinkled) paint. I liked it okay, but the new two tone green & silver looks much better to my eyes. (easier to keep clean too)

Thanks for the responses. I can't say that I'm attracted to the look of the finish here, but if that's the way it's supposed to look then I suppose I can accept it :).

I always thought they were powder coated, guess not?

You're right, they do claim to powder-coat. But unless there's a new method of two-tone powder coating, they are still rubbed or dry-sponged with silver afterward. Last I heard powder coating evenly distributes the powder everywhere, so it would either be all green....or all silver.

It'd be interesting to see the actual process. If you want blah, blah green, you can buy a Redding.:) I have an old 40 year-old crinkled Rockchucker and a later Rockchucker II That's all green. I'm curious now.....may have to buy some silver paste at Hobby Lobby and try updating the Rock Chucker II.

Eh... the green was kinda grubby looking on my RCBS press that is date stamped '69. I fixed that with a can of some kind of rustoleum green or some such... looks good now, but not exactly "RCBS green".

What does it matter?
