But sure a good way to load a few rounds as needed. Original Ideal loading tool for the 38-40. Cast from 16-1 the bullets weigh 167 grs, drop from the mould at .403 and size hole takes them to .401. Prime the cases with rp large pistol primers, charge the case with 32 grs of Olde eynsford 3f, put the lubed bullet in the case and run it into the loading chamber..
The tool gets pretty hot to handle by the time you've cast 50 bullets.

That is for sure the Ideal way to reload for your revolver.:D
You hear how the lee hand press is so good but this is the most compact tool for the job. Wish they still made them or something similar that was so self contained for those "new" calibers we have.:(

I love it. Reloading the old fashioned way. The late Major George Nonte once wrote a book that contained chapters on reloading with minimum or No tools. By the way NICE Colt!

Frog Lyman still makes the 310 tool that uses the separate dies, but they quit putting the mould on the end when Lyman took over from Ideal, and started with the interchangeable dies. There's also a place called the 310 shop that will make dies for the cartridges that Lyman doesn't offer any more.

D Frame, I just picked that Colt up a bout a month ago, brand new and in the box unfired. I believe it's from the run of them from 2 years ago. One of the tightest closest fit Colt's I've ever been around.

Didn't run any of these 12 thru the Colt, but the 89 Marlin sure liked them.
Here's the first 6 that went down the tube from 75 yds offhand.:)

Don, I use a 310 tool to load all my rifle ammunition, 22WCF through to the 45-70. The only rifle I do not reload with the 310 is the 50-70, it needs a different tool. Like you mentioned, not a high volume set up but still more than adequate for the task at hand.

That is a good looking Colt.
