I have a brand new 22-250 with a 26" barrel and I've been load developing with several different powders I already had on hand that were supposed to be very good powders for the caliber. Common powders that are also commonly used in 223 caliber, we know them well. I have not been happy with groups and was very discouraged as my groupings were 1-2" at 100yds and I've been expecting one ragged hole groups. Then I got hold of some IMR-4320 from a friend to try and wala, one ragged hole it is. It seems my rifle likes slow for caliber powders, too slow for 223. Next to try for me is H380 and Win 760. Reloading is never ending learning process.

Try some 4895 in your 22-250. It works very well for me. H380 is also an excellant powder for this caliber. These have both been my fall back powders for years. The 380 will give you higher velocities. The 4895 is a touch more accurate for me.

My only concern is accuracy/groupings; the caliber itself will be fast enough. I think I will lean as of now to powders no faster than 4320..........H380, Win 760, 4350, H414, AA2700, RL-15 are on my radar screen to try.

I also have to vote for IMR4895. I get excellent accuracy out of it with mid 50gn bullets out of a 26" 1-12.

22-250 powder

My favorite load for 55gr. bullet was a compressed load of IMR 4350. I don't recall the weight. Basically fill the case to about 1/4 in from the top. Yes, I did weigh the powder though.

My 22-250's

For me, BL-C(2) with a 52gr. Sierra HPBT @ around 3500fps. gives the best groups==Most always cover 3 shot group @ 100yds. with a Dime.

I am NOT any kind of a "Bench Pro", but my Remington 700's do a good job for me..Bill.:D

bluetopper: I shoot a old model Savage 22-250 befor the acture trigger with a 26in HD barrel. I use 36.5 grs of Varget and a 55gr V-Max bullet at 3795 fps I have been told, don`t have a croney. Shot out of my rifle this load is scarey accurate under 1/2 inch at 100yds off a dead rest. The Guys at Hornady told me to try this load and that my old Savage should shoot it very well. Well it sure does and the really great thing about finding this load is that it shoots the same in my Son`s Savage that is exactly like mine only His is newer and has the acura trigger on His rifle. We both use a 8-32X40 AO Bushnell model 4200 ElITE scope on both of our rifles. I don`t load any load now but this one for our Savage HD 22-250`s. We were given a really great gift from the Guys at Hornady, We can`t thank them enought. You might want to give this load a try in Your rifle. I really don`t think We will find anything else that will even come close to what we have. For this load is a Coyote, PD,or Groundhog`s worst night mare.

I've always had a soft spot in me for the 22-250, been loading it since about 1993 or 94, some where around that time. That one is a Browning A Bolt II BOSS, 24" barrel I think, really nice shooter, my other is a bargain bolt Ruger American, 21: barrel I think.

But anyway, regardless of the barrels, both do best with the slower burner's. Lately I was loading some 52 gr. Match grade HP's, and 55 HP varmint bullet. So not having any of the powders I normally use, I reverted to some old Speer# 10 data with IMR-4350, actually data that I cut my teeth on with this cartridge years earlier? The results were nothing short of excellent, no surprise there for me.

Varget though has had a solid place in my 22-250 powder line up for quite some time also. But I was out, so I just grabbed the 4350.

Now also one that has produced top notch accuracy was IMR-4895. I had some left, but wasn't sure it would be enough to load 100 rounds.

I was going to give 4320 a try, should have. But since I have a couple lbs. of it, and a box of Sierra 55 gr. HP's to load, I might just have to load a batch up to see. It would be cool to add another tack driver powder to my 22-250 line up.

Thanks for the report.

H414 has worked very well in the 22-250 for me. I've had better accuracy from the 50 gr slugs than heavier ones.

IMR 3031 or IMR 4064 with 55gr Serria Spitzers Flat Base Bullets is what my old Remingtom Mod 700 ADL loves. It also likes the bullet very close to the lands and no boat tails bullets, for my 700 for some reason.

bluetopper: ((( I made a big mistake, that I really need to correct. ))) I am using a 50gr V-MAX bullet instead of a 55gr V-MAX bullet. The Guys at Hornady told me that the 55gr V-MAX would probabley not shoot as well in our 26in HD Barreled Savage Model 12`s as the 50gr V-MAX because of the twist rate of our barrels. If the Guys at Hornady told me that I needed to wear pink socks will reloading and shooting, I would darn sure have them on. They have given me a few other loads that have really worked well for me also. I am really in debt to them for their kindness and expert advice. I am really sorry if I have caused any body reading this any problems. You know when you get old and fat you are just in the way.
