I have been in contact with a young shooter who has happened across a chance at a 90s model 3" 38 special Smith and Wesson. Sorry I do not have a model as he wasn't sure himself of it.
I informed him of checking the cylinder for play with the hammer cocked,"empty of course", taking a close look at the cone, and checking to make sure the trigger wasn't bubba-ed to break from a slight breeze.
Did I miss anything?
He stands to pay $300 for the pistol and 100 rds of factory hollow points.
I told em buy it and if he decides he doesn't want it I'd take it.

I'm not too savvy on Smith history or their specifics. Is there anything I'm missing?

If I remember correctly there are a few models that were made with 3" barrels as a limited release, or as a special order for some agency. It is possible this particular model is worth a lot more than $300 to collectors. If it is mechanically sound and in reasonable condition, $300 is a good deal. If either of you find out later that it is collectible, then all the better.

Unless it's been dragged behind a truck, and even then in some cases, most any S&W 38 is worth $300.00 these days.

It might not be a great deal, but you won't get hosed either.

And if it does have timing issues, an AGI lesson covers the repair of a S&W revolver well.
Fairly simple (well, relatively simple) repair and/or replacement of critical parts. Just make sure the bore and cylinder are good, and the frame's not cracked.

^^^ This. I don't remember the last time I came across a S&W revolver for less than $300 unless it was completely trashed.

A three inch 5 shot J frame Model 36 or three inch 6 shot K frame Model 10 from that era may be an Australian police trade in. These were shipped back to the USA a few years back after being traded in on new .40 M&Ps.
Regardless, a three inch barrel brings a small premium. Four inch Model 10 or 64 police trade ins have sold from Buds in recent times for $280. So a three inch with ammo for $300 is a good deal.

Thanks for all the replies. I hope it all works out for him. I'm a little jealous.

Well I just heard from him and the good news is the the Smith is in pretty good condition. Bad news was that the serial number had been ground off the gun. He has a pretty good head on his shoulders and walked away.
I'm not sure what his relationship to the seller is and he'll have to make his own decisions, but personally I would have a hard time not reporting that to the local LEO.

I'm glad he had enough sense to walk away. Buying a gun with a tampered serial number can never turn out well.

A discussion with the local sheriff might be in order.
