I have been considering a home defense shotgun I am not new to the sport of shooting but I've never really had a lot of time behind a shotgun. I own a few but nothing I would consider a home defense model. My Wife got me a Benelli and it is amazing for hunting and skeet. I got a Mossberg 500. I don't care that I can not put a folding stock on it or easily accessorize it. I had a Saiga but after it jammed a few times I sold it. I saw the Kel Tec. I have never cared for the name. I think I would buy this if not for the name. Am I being ignorant as well as arrogant? Last, sorry if you have already beaten this horse.

Greetings backatcha!

That Mossberg 500 will serve you well in a home defense role. Purchase an 18" (sold as 18.5") smoothbore barrel with any choke from "cylinder bore" (basically no choke), improved cylinder, or modified.

There have been countless discussions over what is the best shotgun ammunition for such a role... for me, it boils down to 00 buck. Whatever you choose, take the new barrel and your ammunition choice to the range and "pattern" the load at very close and close distances (up to 10 yards).

It is indeed surprising to learn that the word "scattergun" really does not apply here (with the legal-length 18+" barrels, anyway). At very close distances (5 yards and less), you'll not see any pellet pattern much larger than 6" in diameter. You will have to use your aim, which is where a shoulder stock aids in consistent, repeatable aimpoints.

I'm with 200Apples on this one. Spend your money on the 18.5" barrel for the Mossberg 500. You will have a gun for 2 separate purposes should you want. The money you save from buying the barrel instead of a new gun could be spent on ammo and accessories. The only real accessories you might need are a light mounted up front, an extra shell holder or a sling. Most of these tactical doo dads folks put on their guns don't really improve the gun's ability to protect and defend its owner. Don't forget to team it up with a quality handgun and train to transition from one to the other.

Nothing wrong with a good old Mossberg 500 (or a Maverick 88 for that matter), in the home defense role. All I added to mine was a Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad and a shell holder for the buttstock.

Cannonman,

Whatever as long as it is loaded with black powder! ;->

Seriously I thought you would have a 1841 Mountain howitzer at the end of the hall loaded with Canister.

I too believe your best and cheapest bet is to get an 18.5 inch bead sighted Mossy 500 barrel.

No Kel Tec fans? The Police did think I was nuts when I asked if I could shoot my cannons at my house. Then, "YOU FANS of THR" started jabbing me about my insurance for shooting cannons at my house. As much as I like the Howitzer idea, I don't know if it would fit under my bed?!?! I though the Kel Tec looked awesome and the idea of 14 in the pipe I also liked. As far as 00, I agree up to the point that you otta see what a bucket of 1" steel bearing do to a sheet of plywood at 40 yards!

So I have a decent amount of time behind the KSG and have had no real problems with it. I like it, but I have found that a lot of guys look at it more as a novelty. The only downside I can see to using it as a HD weapon is the tube selector switch. Under stress it could be cumbersome to some folks. Then again you'd be throwing a lot of lead before having to use the selector. The length would make it ideal for HD in my opinion. Sorry to hear your move didn't go as planned.
