I'm in the market for a new AR 15. I just want a basic rifle, no whistles & bells. I want a flip up rear sight but no carry handle because I will add a scope. I'd like to keep the price in the $700-$800 range or less.

I plan on checking out some Carbon 15's. I've heard pro's & con's about them, some really like them, some don't. Some claim their plastic uppers & lowers will break easily or won't stand the test of time. They said pretty much the same thing about Glocks when they came out. They're plastic, they won't last, who wants a plastic gun? Well, we see how that turned out. Comments please.

You can build your own. Or the S&W M&P Sport is a good option IMO.

As far as the Carbon 15 is concerned, I'm not sure where I stand on it. I'm perfectly fine with the polymer lowers, but I'm still unsure of my own thoughts on the upper being polymer. Anyways, look around, almost every AR manufacturer has an entry level AR now.

Check out CORE15. Their stuff is premium level at a good price with a no B.S. lifetime warranty. I picked one out for my buddy and I will go as far as stating it is as good or better than a Colt at a DPMS price....

You can get a Colt for about that price anymore. Check out CDNN investments.com and see if they still have the Colt 6920 for $800

Colt, Danirl Defense or Bravo Company Machine.
You might save money elsewhere, but these are good rifles at a great price and you can't go wrong with any of them.

It's Bravo Company Manufacturing ;)

Agreed, of course. Three excellent choices and prices on all AR's are plummeting right now, excellent time to buy

I know I may be in the minority but I would choose a Colt full mil spec minus the full auto of course M16A1 with a 20 inch pencil barrel with the faster twist for the heavier longer modern bullets (do they even make them?)

The 20 inch barrel is what you need to get the full potential out of the 5.56 and the original profile is really the most ergonomic out of them all with better balistics, greater range, and about the same weight (6.5 lbs unloaded) as the m4

Since you are not going to go full auto a pencil barrel should not be a concern.

If you like a flat top I would still choose a 20 inch barrel. I don't like the idea of a 16 inch barrel for this caliber.

After my recent experience with S&W customer service, I would not even consider the M&P: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=771366

You are in the market at the best possible time. There is no need to go with low-end bottom of the barrel stuff like a Carbon 15 on your budget. Right now, for $800, you can get a very nice rifle with all mil spec features if you shop right. I'd say this Spikes middy is currently the best deal going: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.a...+16"+Midlength+Rifle+(No+Magazine)&groupid=11

What??!

I checked AIM for a Spikes rifle and didn't see that.

If you are dead set on $800 max budget, get the Spikes.

Or for a little more get the $895 (shipped) Colt.

Win-Win decision right there

(I'd probably take the Spikes because it's a mid length

You're a Ruger-Man. Get one of the new Rugers, they are more than solidly in your price range and Ruger makes a solid, no frills rifle.

DO NOT buy a Carbon 15.

Dude...Colt $895...Spikes $800.

S&W M&P Sport if you want/can hit that $600 price point and don't mind the 1:9 barrel that won't stabilize heavier bullets well...pass on the Ruger.

The Carbon 15's are pointless in my opinion, when you can get much better rifles for the same price. I've worked on one of those Carbons and I was absolutely turned off by the design. I love Glocks. I carry a Glock 19 every day. But polymer uppers are scary. If for nothing else, avoid them because of parts interchangeability. They use different barrel nuts and maybe a couple other different parts. As a side note. Get a Spike's mid length. Mine is incredibly accurate for a 14.5. Spike's makes great stuff. Or build your own. Two YouTube videos from now, and you could know how to build your own AR for much cheaper.

I'd say Spike's Tactical, Stag (there are good deals out there on them if you look), or Colt (good deals to be had, but again, you have to look around).

Yep, Colt or Spikes are the best deals going right now on complete ARs for sure... at least in the "basic carbine/HD/2A" category. Like Warp said, I give slight preference to that Spikes since it's mid length, and also because it has a lighter profile barrel, but you really can't go wrong with either.

Also it's sold out now, but PSA frequently puts the Colt 6720 on sale for $800. That is the pencil barreled version of the 6920, and I prefer it personally. Sub 6 lbs. from the factory.

$800? Check AIM, they have Spikes Tactical mid-lenghts for around $800. They are good to go... I have two of them and never any issues with them. That is my 2cents....

Well, they are so cheap now...buy one of each.

Seriously, since you have minimal requirements you can't really go wrong with almost any on the market...except the Carbon 15.

Built a basic mil spec rifle for ~ $430 using PSA upper w/Anderson lower ...you could probably do it for less with some patience.
