AL: State Bill to Ban Guns in Churches

State Bill Aims To Ban Citizens From Taking Guns To Church

A bill that proposes to ban the carrying guns in church in Alabama. Violators could face a Class C misdemeanor with up to 3 months in jail and up to $500 in fines.

" Larry Burch is against the bill. "No matter if it's a Southern Baptist, Jewish congregation or others, they all have the right to defend themselves against extremists," Burch said. The Republican Chairman of the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee Randy Wood says the group will give the bill a fair shake. However, Woods doesn't know how people would feel about legislating private entities, like churches."

Again, you can't fix stupid. Those sponsoring this bill are stupid.

At the church my mother goes to, the minister actually recommends those with carry permits, carry. My brother and I went to church with her on her birthday last fall, and before they got started and folks were getting seated and socializing, I noticed a deacon standing behind us on the back wall whose untucked shirt had flipped up over his holstered pistol.
I may have never felt safer in my life. :D

Church

Wow, another '' Gun Safe Zone '' ? And just to make it a juicier place to terrorize, it belongs to those infidels ! Our Govt has more *******s than a flock of chickens from Frank Purdue................:barf:

I don't see this bill getting anywhere either. Churches can already "ban" firearms on their premises by putting up signs and be willing to pat down parishioners or setup metal detectors. Something I don't see many trying to do. I don't go to church anyway so even if this passes (ice cube chance in a very warm place) won't bother me at all.

Clear violation of 1st and 2nd amendment if it did pass. If a state can infringe on your bill of rights then that is no better than DC infringing on them.

"Well, you know, between all the talking in tongues and "hallelujah"-ing and passing snakes around, someone might get excited and start shooting. It's for their own protection!"

Sometimes I wonder what some people think goes on in churches...

All the churches I'm familiar with have fairly elaborate governing systems, and they deal with everything from fund raising, rents and repairs, and property management to dress codes and childcare. If the membership of any church of whatever denomination decides they don't want guns at their services, they're quite capable of making such a rule and enforcing it without the secular authorities becoming involved.

Don't be too sure such an idiotic bill won't pass.
SC also bans carry in church or other established religious sanctuary unless express permission is given by the appropriate church official or governing body.

I'll be very surprised if the good people of Alabama will put up with this proposal... I still have family there so I'll be watching to see the outcome.

This has even less than zero chance of passing. Alabama lawmakers know (with a couple of exclusions) they would not only be out of a job next election cycle but would not be able to get another one in state government. I am the treasurer of a Missionary Baptist church in central Alabama so I do have a dog in this fight.

That doesn't go on in any church I've ever been to, I'm 62 and have gone to church all my life.

Grew up in AL, don't remember the crush of news stories about problems with the mixture of guns and churches. Maybe they're just trying to get out in front of the inevitable chaos that is about to explode now that AL's defense of marriage law got bashed by the courts.

Yeah, but South Carolina is different. You also have to notify the the LEO you are carrying upon official contact and you have to notify a homeowner you are carrying before entry.

To be fair, Alaska, Arkansas and Louisiana join SC with this silliness. :what:

Its the same small group of Democrats that introduce anti 2A laws every year and every year they go nowhere.

That has to be fought, at least in part, on the basis that a private entity cannot be controlled to that degree. It may have little or no chance of passing this round but the seed is now planted that for the "greater good" legislative power should be allowed to extend to that point. Kind of like the governor of Conn. yesterday, declaring a travel ban because of the blizzard up there. Totally socialistic and unconstitutional, but it can appeal to many of the masses because it is in the interest of "safety". Never mind that the resources that it would take to enforce or prosecute such a ban would cost way more than any rescue efforts, and STILL put responders in jeopardy anyway.

It is one of those things that can quickly morph from a state issue to a national issue

Well of course it is different.
Do any 2 states have identical firearms laws?

Do any other states have the same two identical firearm laws mentioned in post #14 as the 4 states of AK,AR,LA and SC?

The answer is no,

It is just an effort to prevent/scare people from going to churches because they know that a gun free place is the most dangerous place for anyone in there.

Let me guess the person behind this bill is a dumocrat, right?
Uh, that would be a big 10-4 as stated in the linked article. "Alabama Democrat Representatives Thomas Jackson and Darrio Melton think so. They are co-sponsoring a bill that seeks to ban the practice."

but the person who wants to shoot up a church is not going to care about the law and the parish folk are going to be sitting ducks, unable to defend themselves.at least with legitimate ccw holders armed a present, narrows the odds
