Stuff overheard at Walmart last night:
"Obama just wrote an executive order saying that we can't buy high powered rifle rounds no more. Give me a box of the 380 and the 306."
Cashier takes a WWB box of 380 ACP and a Remington Core-Lokt 30-06 out of the case, then asks him "You sure you want this? It says it's core locked."
"Oh, that's no problem, that's just the primer on the end of the bullet. Obama's going to ban the ammo, you know. Can I get another box of the 380? And some 9mm hollow points? Yeah, the executive order, can't buy the high power ammo no more."

It was surreal.
I walked out later with several boxes of 62gr 5.56 NATO and 147gr 7.62 NATO rounds, but got a lot of dirty looks from associates who were intent on holding them back for their buddies and didn't get the chance to do so by falsely claiming a '3-box limit'.
I did not, repeat, did not clear out their inventory. They had 40 boxes of SS109 remaining when I left.

My local Walmart is cleaned out of ZQ1 and the Federal XM855. I will be interested to see if any comes back into stock.

Buy it, don't buy it, but

Don't complain about others who do, regardless of why they are buying it. I started buying all the 7.62x39 ammo that I could afford, and still am, once they started banning items from Russia. If I had seen this coming I would have bought it too. You are pretty much dammed if you do and dammed if you don't around here. If you stock up you are a hoarder or flipper and, if you don't you are an unprepared sheep. If I see it and can afford it, I may buy some and I might even sell it later on at a profit of course.

What do you man by "falsely"?
Every WalMart in my area has signs posted that there is a 3-box limit.
This particular one didn't. Local Wal-Marts ended that restriction a while ago for all calibers other than 22LR.
Associates at this one claimed "all calibers" but I asked them to check with the store manager. Store manager gave the go ahead.

Some bullets… such as ones coated with Teflon, really are specifically designed to defeat bullet proof vests, and we think they should remain illegal,
I see they are still throwing that lie out there.

If one wants to know if something is armor piercing, shoot some AR 500 steel at 100 yards with it. True AP will zip right through while SS-109 will splatter.

Many, many rifle rounds will defeat body armor at close range, even today with the better armor. You lose so much velocity fired from a short barrel handgun that would be easy to conceal I wonder how many of the small calibers like .223 still would.

Either way, this is similar to when Clinton wanted to ban ARs and AKs and the FBI stats showed they were a non problem related to crime. Something like they had been used in one tenth of one percent of crimes. But being a non problem has never stopped the hard core antis from trying to ban something.

They want it all and will use any excuse they can to write legislation to ban items. We must fight them at every step, even when it is an item we have no interest in, because ultimately they want the items we do have an interest in. Don't be alone when they come for yours because you weren't there to fight with others about things you didn't care about. We are all in this together. Divide and conquer is one of the greatest tactics.

I placed an order for M855 at non-inflated priced less than 24 hours after this reg was published in the Federal Register. I'm down to 500-600 rounds of M193 and it did not even occur to me that there would be a run on that as well. I want to try out the Brazilian all-lead 62gr imported by Magtech but can't find it anywhere (still a lot of it on line earlier this week).

It definitely seems that people are buying up all 5.56 and possibly even things that are not 5.56 in a general panic.

Our Wal-Marts in our area still only allow 3 boxes. I don't need to buy, but I like to check every once in a while for availability and price and except for the high price soft point .223/5.56 has been cleared out. An associate said it has been similar to after SH. The associate also stated that he has even tried to tell people it hasn't happened yet and it is just the M855/SS109 but the customers are convinced it's all 5.56.

I usually buy range ammo at academy. Had lots of 855 but zero budget priced 223. I don't think most people even know what they are buying at this point.

No, I like Independence personally. I'm not a fan of steel core due to the target damage. i like 55gr mostly and its cheaper. on a different note though it still pisses me off on the ammo regulation. I dont believe that they have the right to ban it. If they were going after tracers and said it was due to the risks of fire (only in very dry states) i could buy that.

The lack of panic prices has me furious. I'm ready to offer up some nice M855 as soon as the going price makes it to $1. Not even close.

Some places hadn't even heard of the pending ban. I shoot M193 mostly and stopped in a local shop to buy a few hundred. Guy at the counter started talking about how all the M855 they had was inexplicably gone in two days. Had to explain it to him.
