Daisy 853 bargain

Thanks for posting that. I have an old 853 with a trigger mod done to it. It's fantastic. The Daisy's may not look like much, but they have it where it counts.

g.willikers- you should be able to. As far as I know, you do not have to be a member of the CMP to purchase the air rifles.

Oh, and to add. There's a pamphlet you can purchase for the 853 called Tom Johnson's Sporter Tips Care & Servicing. Was $7 or so a few years back, and I think I got it from the CMP. No where near as exhaustive as the 499 excel, but pretty good.

You can buy one as long as you send them a check. You don't need to be a member of anything to do this. About a week after they get your check, you will get the rifle. Very rapid turnaround. Rifles were used by ROTC so they had to be kept in good repair and not abused.

Only thing I would say is check your state laws on this.....some places would make you go to an FFL to get the gun.

Yes our country is that screwed up.

Good point, Michigan does seem to be a bit draconian in terms of pellet gun laws.

Those laws should be about to change. Bills have passed through the legislature and are headed for the gov's desk. If he signs, air guns will no longer be regarded as firearms in Michigan.

I ordered my Avanti 853 online new, and paid a whole lot more, before I learned of the CMP program. Oh well, I still love it! Very accurate within it's power and distance limits. Gotta remember, it is a ten meter target rifle, not a 50 yard squirrel rifle!

The entire 7,8,9 53 series are winners! SUper accurate, quiet and can be shot all day!

Mine just arrived from CMP today. It was in excellent shape, EXCEPT FOR FEDEX MANAGED TO SNAP THE STOCK IN HALF THROUGH THE PISTOL GRIP!!!

What a pain in the butt, and a disappointment. Now I have to go through the whole circus with FedEx to get this corrected/replaced...:banghead:

What a disappointment! Well, hang in there, because it will be well worth the aggravation when you get a replacement stock/rifle. Maybe CMP will simply ship out a new stock.

If worse comes and they won't replace the stock, Numrich has Daisy 753 stocks. Thinking of getting one myself, as I like the style better than the 853 stock.

What pellets are you guys liking in the 853's? I am asking for the gun's intended purpose, paper at 10m

Bigdog57 -
thank you for that tip. I will check it out as that may be a better option. The gun otherwise is in perfect shape.

I have a 953. I was shooting Daisy Precision-max pellets, and just couldn't get it to group as nicely as I wanted. Occasional flyers were an aggravation that I just came to expect. I wasn't thinking so much of a more accurate pellet, but rather a heavier one as a solution. I bought a tin of RWS Meisterkugeln (the 8.3 gr, called 'rifle') and my groups shrank by about 25%.

Looking at the two side by side makes Daisy's look like they were made by some drunk with a rock. The RWS pellets are things of beauty; they are also harder (no crushed skirts) and they fit tighter in the chamber. My barrels stay cleaner now, too.

I'd been getting Daisy's for about one cent each; the RWS cost about twice that. My new nickname for Daisy's is "Penny Flyers."

(Edit to add) I get mine mail-order from Pyramyd Air--they have a buy-three-get-one-free deal on all ammo. I order eight tins at a time.

Heron,
I think finding the right weight pellet is half of it. I don't know what the answer is.

These?: RWS Meisterkugeln Rifle .177 Cal, 8.2 Grains, Wadcutter, 500ct

I got mine from Pyramid Air also - 1 order so far and was impressed with the price and packaging.

I am trying to do some ammo testing. It is not conclusive at all yet. I need to get the right target paper and test in the same conditions. I am just looking to have my shots on call and no flyers. For practice I can discount the wild flyers

I have the RWS Diablo:

Liberty1776- that sucks. You should be able to contact Daisy for a parts price list. I think the stocks were around $50. Which is probably $50 more than you were looking to spend- hopefully fedex reimburses you for that.

Can the broken stock be glued?
