Aside from the AR or AK, what is your favorite home defense carbine

a 45 colt lever gun would probably be my choice. either that or the 44 mag semi auto carbine from Ruger of previous years. And that would be my choice BEFORE an AR15 or AK47

I'm slowing gaining confidence in my HiPoint 4095. Shot a few boxes of ammo, not even a hiccup. I rapid fired one of the 15 round mags as fast as could pull the trigger....didn't even slow it down. Hey, I'm not saying it would be my first choice.

I don't believe a center fire carbine to be a home defense weapon unless I lived alone, with no close neighbors. I've got a winchester 1600 semi auto 16 gauge I cut the barrel down on. It's what sits next to my door. I've got it loaded with some #4 buck shot

I can't believe no one has mentioned an SKS. Dead reliable, accurate enough, semi-auto, fairly large capacity, medium power round, it's a classic for a good reason. There are obviously other 7.62 x 39 carbines around and I'm sure many of them are fine. But my SKS has been incredibly reliable for over 20 years and that's the most important thing any HD should do IMO. If it fires every time without issues I can work with it. Even without the low price I paid for mine I would still consider it a viable HD carbine.

Posts 16 and 17 of this thread both said SKS. Mines kept upstairs with 9 hollow points in the magazine, chamber empty, safety off.

No AK or AR? A Lee-Enfield No. 5 "Jungle Carbine" or Winchester Model 94 30/30 are the only two other carbines I have. Of the two, I'd go with the Lee-Enfield as the bolt is super smooth and faster than the Winchester's lever.

I thought I checked every post but apparently I missed those two. I didn't read everything in detail. Just sorta skimmed through it I guess.

I agree Cee Zee, I have a paratrooper SKS which I kinda consider to be the closest the com-block could come to my first choice... the M-1 Carbine.

Home Defense? A handgun would be my first choice, but as long as we're talking "home defense carbine" I'd have to go with one of my SKS's. Lots of folks have mentioned M-1 carbines and that would be real nice also. Too bad I sold the only one I've ever owned about 10 years ago. Another one of those "I shoulda kept it!" guns.

Another question is: What weapon would you be willing to have placed into the tender, caring hands of an evidence technician?
A BIG point against my M1 carbine for HD.

Maybe it was just bad luck but my M-1 Carbine was unreliable. Maybe my Lee-Enfield Jungle Carbine is my favorite!

If it saves the lives of myself and my family, I could not care less if it sat in evidence til the universe collapses upon itself. It did it's job, and I won't miss it, or any other gun that the cops hold. I'm sure I'd miss my wife and kids much more than any of my guns.

I cannot agree more. NOTHING comes before my loved ones; not even the rest of my life in prison, if necessary!
I was simply pointing out that if a 'cheaper' option is available, use that first.
