I hate to even post this thread, but I will anyway. My varmint upper shipped and I need an optic. I don't want spend a bunch. I like shooting bolts more than my ar so far and I just do it for fun. I end up doing target work more than anything and if I was hiking/hunting, I am sure I would take a bolt. I mostly have Nikon or Burris glass on my other rifles but don't mind going lower price on this one. Very light use from truck to bench on a heavy AR 223 platform. I am not going to be a brand snob I know it will have limitations.

Here is my list of wants.

1. Price, less than $400.
2. Thinking 6-24x. Could go 20x on the top end Mostly be a bench gun. I have another AR with a 3 power Nikon scope or open sites
3. I would like side focus
4. Want turrets that are finger adjustable with resettable to zero. This is a must. Covered or not does not matter.
5. Target reticle would be great, but could work with other such as Mildot
6. Prefer 30 mm tube, but 1 inch would work for this price point
7. I don't want illuminated

Seeing what I can find with Vortex, Weaver, Bushnell, Meuller, Simmons . . .

Also considering Meuller 8-32x for target shooting, but just seems like too much power.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

That's a lot of magnification to ask for in that price range!

A few "close" suggestions,

Nikon ProStaff 5, 4.5-18x40 SF fine crosshair target dot, 1/8 MOA resettable turrets (capped), 1" tube. About $450.

Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 SF mil dot 1/4 MOA resettable turrets (tall capped), 30mm tube. About $470.

Honestly there will have to be trade-offs in that range. You might also look at the Clearidge XP 6-20x duplex/dot AO, though I know you want side focus. Weaver doesn't make anything that fits the checklist (IMO) and though I've read many positive reviews on the Muellers, I've read some really pointed ones from reviewers I trust that lead me to believe you wouldn't be happy.

I wish I had more suggestions for your search, maybe $675 for a Sightron Big Sky II? Hopefully a few more resourceful members will chime in. Best of luck with the search.

Thanks Sky. These low cost optics threads are not very sexy and don't get much action.

I ended up checking out Natchezz. I like the site since I am a shopper of sales.

I ordered a 4-20x Weaver Super Slam. I wanted something lower than 6 or 8 power for possible hunting, but still wanted the top end for bench use. It has good reviews on other forums. MSRP is $830 and it was on sale for $389. It has finger adjustable turrets which reset to zero and side focus. It will work for me. Made in Japan, not that China would ever cut corners.

If anyone else is shopping for budget scopes, I recommend Natchez and looking around for sale items. Spending is easy, saving for retirement is tough.

Thanks.

Believe it or not, I flipped through the Weaver V and Super Slam models but never spotted one near $400, the reason I noted in my post none fit your criteria. You got a smokin deal and a great scope for your purpose! Enjoy it and the new upper!

I have to agree with Skylerbone on the Vortex Viper scope. Buy once and get quality when you do. I personally have the Viper 6.5X20X50 on a .223 rifle, excellent glass! Buy what you can afford, but get the best, then you don't have to keep going back to that store every 6 months! IMHO

If you go with a mil reticle...you really should go with mil turrets. If you go with a MOA reticle, make sure your turrets are also MOA. Never mix the two. Ad some scope do....many entry-level scopes may have a mildot reticle (MIL based), but the turret adjustments are in 1/4 MOA clicks.

I have a BSA mil dot scope I got in trade a few years back. I didn't think much of it at first but it seems like a decent scope. Mine is a 4-16x40. I think they used to retail for around $140. You may be able to get one used online. Hope that helps.

Baldman. Interesting brand. The 6-24 certainly checks all the boxes. The reticle is interesting idea. Seems a bit like the Nikon spot on web site. I have a buddy who likes buying rifles, but no scopes or sights. I keep bugging him to scope them up and shoot them. I will tell him about the company.

Creature, I agree. The scope I bought has MOA click and just a fine reticle. If I spent with big budgets, I would get a marked reticle that matched the clickers.

My scope should be here tomorrow.

It has a 50 mm bell. I will hold it in place and attempt to measure to try to figure out which scope ring height to get.

That's a good deal on the Weaver Super Slam. For low-end scopes I often recommend the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x that Midway sells for $300-400. The super slam you got should be a nice step up from that, at pretty much the same price. And, I still really like my Weaver Grand Slam for the money. Weaver gives you pretty decent glass for the price point.

After saying that I'd be weary about the Weaver Kaspa scopes. I don't know any one who has one. I don't know much about them, they could be Chinese made for all I know and they are much cheaper than the regular Weaver.

Yes, the Weaver Kaspa scopes are Chinese. I would recommend staying away from them, and sticking to the Classic V series and above (Japanese made).
