Rare they are.

Pawn shop. They wanted $699...

I waited weeks and then offered 600. Tax included 649.50.

They took the bait. It has real nice S&W combat grips and shoots dead on. No fancy sight changes to the right or left.

Some YoYo unscrewed the strain screw to lighten the action. I just screwed it back in.

Later I'll do my action job, polish all the scratches out, and generally smooth it out. It is tight, no end shake or crane shake. Locks with no cylinder movement to.

you will love it, the only down side is they are loud you will need ear plugs for shooting pratice. i bought my 686 from a friend who didn,t use it for 400.00 and its my favorite firearm to carry in a shoulder holster while riding my four wheeler, its the only time i use a shoulder holster as it keeps the revolver out of the way and tight against mt chest with no flopping. i carry 125gr remington HP,s in it. eastbank.

Nice. Congrats on the find. I have the same model. I bought it new in the early 80's. It was a limited run for distributor Lew Horton. It came with a S&W branded thumb-break holster. It's heavy, but to me that's not a bad thing. I can actually stand to shoot magnums through it. I think you will like it.

oohhh... a S&W AND a Subaru Forester booklet... now that's a seriously winning combo.

That is one beautiful gun! I've never been too fond of S&W's stainless steel finish, but I've learned to polish them to almost gleaming. I have a 6-inch that's gorgeous, but I'd love to have a 3- or 4-inch model. Three-fifty-sevens are such great guns to begin with, and the size-to-power ratio is darn near perfect. The only downside is that ear-splitting supersonic blast that accompanies all that power. The .357 is the first gun I ever bought and was the first gun I realized I couldn't afford to shoot. The 686, with a 3-inch barrel and round-butt grips, would be a great seller. So why doesn't S&W crank up and produce them?

The S&W 686 is one of those guns that are almost too beautiful
to shoot. Fortunately, they're also too beautiful not to shoot!

One just like that was my first revolver. It was an M marked 686 with the same grips. I bought it in '97 with about 10 boxes ,357 Remington hollow points for $400. I shot all the ammo and sold it to my Dad. He traded it off shortly after. I've been thinking of getting another to replace it.

Well I hasten to add I do have a few more L frames...

2.5" and 3.0" model 686's and 686+ have been in production for many years, and are still being produced.

I picked the one up on the lower right about a year and a half ago.

I was in a shop about a year ago, they had 686P's in 2.5, 3, 4, and 6. It was a pretty small out of the way shop too.

I took home the 6"!
