Been wanting one of these for a while now. Came upon a deal and just could not walk away. Uberti Model 1873 Sporting in .357 caliber. I am sure looking forward to seeing what the pistol caliber is like in this rifle. Just might become my favorite :)

A friend of mine had one he used for CAS. It was incredible on looks, and after a few hundred bucks in work it was as functional as it was beautiful. My biggest beef with his aside from the money he had in it was that it seemed to weigh double what it should have. I hope your experience is better than his...he sold his and bought a new rossi and a new shotgun. He said he broke even but I doubt it with that much money in gunsmithing.

The 1873 is heavy compared to other "pistol" cartridge levers but they're great rifles. They're a lot lighter in chamberings larger than .32-20 and .357 due to the larger bore. Mine's a fantastic shooter putting every load I've tried in it into an inch at 50yds.

(before some internet smarty says the .38WCF was not actually a pistol cartridge, I know)

I bought it to shoot modern standard .357 ammo. I wouldn't expect it not to shoot normal off the shelf ammo. Nothing in the paperwork indicates a need to shoot anything other than that.

The Sporting Rifle has a straight grip stock. The Deluxe Sporting Rifle has the pistol grip. Mine came from Dixie Gun Works.

That's one fine looking rifle! I saw a Deluxe Sporting version awhile back and the wood and metal finish were absolutely first class in terms of their appearance.

Westkentucky, the octagonal barrel on the 1866's and '73's sure does make them a lot heavier than the same guns with round barrels. One 73 I hefted with a round barrel felt more like a carbine 94 for weight and swing.

I looked at the new Henry Big Boy in .357 before buying this one. It felt considerably heavier. SO much barrel heavy that I didn't buy it at the time. I don't know the exact numbers, but this Uberti .357 is certainly more balanced.

That is the top rifle in SASS and should digest any SAAMI spec .357 ammo just fine. Even if you never shoot a cowboy match, the rifle can be improved significantly from a little smoothing up and changing out the heavy factory springs.
