After much resisting I finally drank the ar koolaid and ordered a bcm recce 16 kmr mk2 in dark bronze. This is going to be my first ar. Also ordered 8 gen 3 pmags, a sling and found a awesome deal on some mbus pros. Still debating (saving) on what I want to do as far as optics. I've been looking at the vortex strike eagle as I already have some of there stuff and love it. Anything else I need other than a lot of ammo?

I have a Vortex on a 9mm AR SBR and love it. It has never been an issue for me. Also it is very accurate and comes with much more accessories and options then a $600 Aimpoint. I am impressed.

You seemed to buy a very expensive first time rifle and did not skimp on mags... I am curious and mean no offense, but why one of the cheapest optics you can find?

MBUS are good. I have had the reg ones for years and never a problem. They always have been slapped on and required very very little to no adjusting to be on zero. ALL 5 of my AR's have them as sights or Backup sights. I imagine the Pro's are only better.

Do you plan on doing ANY maintenance? I always recommend a few spare firing pin retaining pins. They wear out occasionally, especially when you remove and clean the bolt carrier group regularly.

You may also want to consider a chamber brush to get the "star" area well and clean.

Others will consider star patches but honestly I have never used them.I use an aerosol cleaner lube such as Break Free CLP and blast that area directly. A cleaning brush or toothbrush is also "essential" for good scrubbing of small areas such as in and around the BCG.

Since I have a handful of AR's I keep a firing pin as a spare as well, but in over probably 100K rds in 5 guns I have NEVER broken a firing pin.

I'm on the fence on the optics and am not really sure. Maybe a aimpoint micro? Eotech? I like the idea of a variable power scope of i had the money I'd get a vcog. I know luepold makes a couple. It'd be nice if there was somewhere that I could get some hands on with them. I am not the type of person to skimp on quality. If you have any recommendations I'm all ears.

What does everyone use as lube and cleaner? Anybody use shooters choice FP-10?

Great first AR.

For optics, I would look at an Aimpoint micro. It's a fairly lightweight carbine, I'd keep the optics light. But realistically, your optic choice just depends on how you're using it.

As for cleaning, keep the friction points lubed, and it'll run. I use FrogLube on one AR, Slip 2000 EWL on another... happy with both.

If you have any recommendations I'm all ears.
Yes, take the price of an Aimpoint micro and apply it towards tuition and ammo at a 2-3 day carbine course and run the irons. You will be way ahead...and I love red dot sights.

If you have had professional carbine training and this is just your first AR, then I'd recommend an Aimpoint PRO or micro. Good to 300 yds, works great up close in the dark, rugged, battery last for years always on.

Aimpoint or Vortex.

The Aimpoint is more money, but has some advantages. Battery life and durability are the two biggest. Balance your budget with your needs. If your budget supports it, go with the Aimpoint. If money is an issue, get the Vortex and be happy with a decent optic with a very good warranty should you need it.

Another consideration is the Aimpoint is a red dot, while the Vortex you are looking at is a magnified optic. Which suits your wants and needs better?

You've done everything else right, spend the money and get a T2 aimpoint, or at least an aimpoint pro.

Really good rifle you bought there. As far as optics Id do an Aimpoint for a red dot or a Vortex Viper PST 1-4 for a magnified optic. If you decide on a red dot the Aimpoint Micro weighs practically nothing and will keep your rifle very light weight and handy.

Unfortunately I don't actually have the rifle yet. I ordered it directly from the bcm website. They're built to order. But I got the email from bcm customer service that they got all the paperwork and they got my payment. I should have it in a couple weeks. Once I have it I'll share some pictures and a range report.

I do like the idea of taking a carbine course. Anybody have any recommendations on any in the Midwest?

Looks like I'm going to have to keep my eye out for a good deal on a aimpoint.

BCM is affiliated with some of the best training available. Look at the training links ->BCM Links

Nice choice for your first AR!

My favorite RDS is the Aimpoint T-2, best deal at LaRue as a package deal. It is hard to justify the price so my second favorite is the T-1, but if you don't need NV the H-1 is just as good. I've been very happy with my T-1s. I also like the Aimpoint PRO, but I'm not crazy about the mount it comes with and the less available batteries it uses.

If you are going variable, you will need to figure out what your budget is, but I like the Trijicon TR24R which is very good for fast shooting out to 300 yards. If you want a more precision reticle you might want to shop around, but I'd definitely go with a 1-4X or 1-6X.

Some folks really like the Vortex PST 1-4X, I've never used one. Some like the Leupold VXR Patrol 1.25-4X or the SWFA 1-4X or 1-6X. I have a SWFA 1-4X and it has great glass, but is a bit on the heavy side. Some like the SWFA 1-6X. I think these are made in Japan which is FAR better than the Chinese made optics like the Primary Arms 1-6X or the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6X.

Personally, I would get an Aimpoint first, then pick up a cheaper variable later for playing at the range.

Thanks guys I got the email it should be getting delivered today. I'll be sure to put up some pictures. I'll probably just keep the back up sights on for a few months and get comfortable using them while I save up some money for the aimpoint. There's a Vickers course a little north of here in a few months. It's a 2 day carbine and pistol course. I recently bought my first pistol a few months ago also so this sounds awesome. Anybody ever attend one of these courses?

I have to second these guys. That's a fantastic choice for a 1st AR!

I recently purchased a BCM 16" midlength KMR upper with BCM comp, and it is superb. It makes for the absolute smoothest-shooting AR I've ever encountered, and reliability has been perfect. Fit and finish are excellent as well.

BCM truly makes an AR that is a notch above most.

Here's s picture

Hardly "Kool Aid" more like California-made all natural organic juice drink, and not from concentrate, of course.

Looks nice, but something like that would go well with steel H&K M16 magazines.
