Hello all,

I am in the process of looking for a new safe and I have been looking at safes 1500+ with 10 gauge min and weight of at least 1000lbs. What I am thinking of is buying a safe on sale at tractor supply for 799 and just insuring the guns.

I do not own a home and have no renters insurance. I found locktonaffinity.com and supposedly they are NRA approved, whatever that means. For their Armscare plus insurance it is like 230 a year to insure 20,000 in guns.

Does anyone have experience with them or any other company? The weapons I have are all modern and replaceable. No family heirlooms or historical pieces, pretty much all bought new within the past 5 years.

So basically I am thinking the Cannon 48 gun safe for 799 with the insurance will be perfect for me and give me piece of mind that if stolen I will get a check to replace all of it, even though I will have to wait again for the NFA stuff. I am sure the cannon will keep the kids out and that's all I am really concerned with in my area.

230 a year isn't that bad, plus the more expensive safes still wont hold up to things like plasma cutters and enough time. So I am really thinking a cheap safe and insurance is a great idea, what do you think?

I am recently divorced and now need a new safe and that is also the reason why I would like to save a few bucks on the safe. Not making as much anymore without the dual income and my wife had a really good job, made alittle more then me.

That's a nice safe for the money. It won't keep a professional out but if you bolt it down (you should), it'll keep out the casual thief and give you a little fire protection. Combined with insurance you should be GTG.

Call some safe companies in you area and ask if they know of or have any used vaults. I gor a used money vault delivered for $2,500.00. Big double door type over 6' high, 35" deep and 6.5' wide. Weighs 4000# empty and a eight hour fire rating. I did have to strip out the interior and put in something to seperate rifles and a shelf for pistols. A professionsal burgler could get into it buy it would take them a while. Wish I could find another.

Why aren't you looking at renter's insurance? Renter's insurance will cover your guns and everything else that you own as well as provided liability insurance if someone sues you. It is also cheap. My renters is $477 for $100K coverage for personal property, $500K liability, and $20K for temporary housing.

Renters insurance is a. good idea but most policy's only cover about 5000 onthings like guns and jewelry . You can get an inland marine rider on you policy for a pre determined amount. The thing is given time no safe is break proof, you need a burglar alarm . That doesn't give crooks very long to work. So they are going to grab what is handy and run, either that or get caught! One other thing I would recommend, and this is important. Either have your phone line buried underground or run in steel conduit. If someone snips the phone line you have no alarm call going out!

Yes, most renters and homeowners insurance only cover a specific amount for categories such as guns and jewelry. Most companies are happy to provide additional coverage for these categories if you let them know before you purchase the policy.

I had State Farm at one time and they wanted me to haul each and every gun in to a gun shop for an appraisal then they had limited coverage as I recall. That may not still be the case but I dropped them and went with a company that just wanted serial numbers so that's something to consider when shopping. Make sure to get replacment value and not book value. There's a big difference. As I dicker and deal I just call in the numbers, it's handy.

Renter's insurance will not cover your guns and everything else unless you have a 'fire and theft, replacement value' rider. Talk to your agent.
The replacement value part is important too. Insurance companies think everything depreciates over time. Most firearms do not. Moreso with milsurps and other collectables.
Is your apartment up to holding a 1,000 pound safe? Doors big enough to move the thing in?

Thanks for all the responses. Does anyone have any companies in mind? I will contact the eastern insurance people and see what they have to say.

I think Eastern doesn't require serial# etc. ? If that's true/not true, please someone chime in.

I checked with Eastern and they were more expensive than ArmsCare Plus which only requires serial numbers for any fireRms valued over a certain amount, which I can't remember right now. I also like ArmsCare Plus because it's an extension of the $1500 free coverage that you get with your NRA membership. That's probably why it's less expensive because the NRA is in effect paying for your first $1500 of coverage.

I just signed up with ArmsCare. Home owners and renters insurance is pathetic coverage when it comes to firearms. ArmsCare costs approximately about $10 per $1,000 of coverage with the first $2500 free with NRA membership. The form asked if you have any guns valued over $2500, which I assume means those are the guns they want itemized.

I spent a lot of effort researching this a few years ago and ended up with a policy from collectinsure.com.

As a point of reference, coverage for about $100k gun collection value is $500/yr.

Why did you choose them, if you don't mind me asking? I looked at there site and seem fine, I will try to call them tomorrow and ask some questions. The quick quote shows 20,000 for 156/year.

You guys didn't get the Eastern numbers correct. Far cheaper, and you can get a deductible. Like one or 2 guns to save premium.

And the NRA only insures you if you Ask For It. No longer automatic.
