Drone Firing 9mm

2 things
1) an accident waiting to happen for this kid and whomever copies.

2) when said accident occurs it will be blamed on the firearm and not the individual.

Yep!

Ingenious!

But I have flown & crashed enough radio control model aircraft over the years to know that Mr. Murphy is your co-pilot 24/7.

I wouldn't want to be in the same general vicinity with an armed hobby drone!!!

I'm wondering if some enterprising terrorist is going to realize that camera stabilization technology + a scope + a gun + a drone = mobile assassination platform.

I mean, it's no hellfire, but it'll shoot one guy who isn't expecting it.

Hell I'm surprised no one has tried simply putting explosives on one and just flying it into contact range with a target. It seems like pretty low hanging fruit considering how cheap a "drone" is.

A very rudimentary implementation.
I've actually been surprised that this has not happened sooner. But I'm sure that there are many implementations that have yet to be shown in the public eye. Some by the DoD and others by some gifted hackers.
As noted above, drone with GPS stabilization, gimbaled optics and linked firearm (a firearm adapted for such use - rather than the need for it to be held in your hand to save weight), auto ranging and ballistic compensation.
Ultimately you could just ID the 'object' on a GPS and have the drone do the work. You don't need a laser designator if it's a static object.
It would be a pretty simple design and implementation, and is something that I would stay miles from. Whether or not the FAA and the BATF have come up with a set of rules, it is obviously a bad thing and should be rejected until completely understood.

This is a very easy thing to make. It would take anyone with a normal amount of tools, a half hour to make one of them as all you need is a solenoid and a mount for the gun. The stupid part is that they put it on TV, so now every dumb ass in the world who has $100 bucks for the drone, "at Sam's" and a pistol, can make one and probably shoot themselves or their friends in the process.
Doesn't anyone ever think it's a bad idea to show kids and immature adults stuff like this, when you know they are going to copy it.
There have to be thousands of these being made right now.
By the way, if you ever have gone to an event where they fly all sorts of RC planes helicopters etc, any of them could be fitted with a lot more than a handgun. Some are 15 feet long models of B52 bombers , with 4 engines, and jets that are so fast you can barely see them. This is not a new concern, it just should have been kept away from mass media at this time in our Country's problems. The helicopters could be fitted with real missiles, as far as that goes. Or guided into a building packed with "god knows what". I don't understand why this little drone with a pistol attached has drawn so much attention.
When I went to The Academy of Aeronautics, "back in the 60's". we had these air shows every weekend.
Even mockups of carrier landings , with tail hooks on the planes. My Uncle flew these up until his death and was an avid "RC Model Builder" and Pilot".
It's an old hobby that has thousands of participants throughout the USA.
One thing I don't get, is that you always had to be in a certified field and have a special license to fly these things, no matter what they were considered, planes jet's or Helicopters, and since a Drone is really a Helicopter, it should already be covered by existing laws preventing them from being flown in public areas. Kind of like shooting guns goes. You need a license and a specific area, unless on private property out in an area that has no ordinances preventing this type of actions.
Just like you can't shoot a handgun in midtown Manhattan even with a license.

If it can be done... it will be. The only question is how soon for a fully functional small aerial platform with not only weaponry but also the accurate targeting to make it worthwhile...

Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact (and so it goes -Vonnegut). The acceleration of development from concept to reality, then the tremendous strides any technology can make if there's a serious profit motive are the reality we live today... By the way the first item I'd deal with is the "gun" since it wouldn't need the items we usually associate with "handgun".... Designing a sighting system that actually could put a projectile where the operator was looking -that could be done as well...

I'm betting that the next generation of defense or law enforcement will have something like this on either side of the equation if there's a real need... Glad I won't be around to see it...

I've been involved with radio controlled planes and helicopters off and on since the early 1970's. Never seen a license or certified field. What agency issues the licenses and certifies the fields? Please supply some links to the laws or regulatory agencies.

As far as I know the only "regulations" are the FAA guidelines here:

https://www.faa.gov/uas/model_aircraft/

•Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles
•Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times
•Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations
•Don't fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying
•Don't fly near people or stadiums
•Don't fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 lbs
•Don't be careless or reckless with your unmanned aircraft – you could be fined for endangering people or other aircraft

My kids, grandkids, and all their friends just walk into Sam's or Wal-Mart and are flying 20 minutes later. Or if they want something really big they go to Tower Hobbies, order whatever they want to fly, and are flying it 20 minutes after it arrives in the mail two days later. Not like the good old days when you actually had to build them yourself with balsa and dope!

We had a doctor with an RC helicopter (only ones that could afford them in those days!) back in the late 1970's that mounted a Ruger Mk I on it. Used to do strafing runs across the middle of the Gainesville Dragway parking area, which was a huge grass field with our 100' concrete runway in the center of it at the time.

RC - I had some airplanes as a kid.... Took off and flew.... not one planned landing....

Decided being a pilot was for others.... LOL (You are all welcome)

My question is, the kid is 18, right? How did he get a handgun? Thought all states required you to be 21 to own a handgun. Coogs.

Nope. Depends on local laws. Federal is 18 to buy one in a private sale or own one, 21 to buy a handgun from an FFL (licensed dealer).

Since the statute of limitations has run out back in 1974 I had a buddy in college who had a RC model of an Apache twin that he put a launch rail on and mounted a D size rocket motor topped with an M80. He used it against a train that passed by the college and disrupted his watching of Startreck. It took him about five tries but he was able to get his rocket into the window of the caboose. The railroad was not very happy about it at all and threatened to press charges against him IF they could ID him. Things like this happened to us when you have a lot of engineering students sitting around with time on their hands.

Yep, police arrested the drone flyer: For assault on police officers.

The charges have nothing to do with the drone, but stem from an incident last Sunday and a physical altercation with officers, the Clinton police department said.

He was arrested on Wednesday evening after being asked to turn himself in on an outstanding warrant.

Police said he refused to submit to arrest and that he hit and kicked at two officers "repeatedly".

As a result he was charged with two counts of assault and a single count of interfering with an officer.
