Both of my rifle caliber Contenders were 16". The .30-30 didn't really "kick". It more like "rolled", with no snap at all. Using the Sierra 135 gr. single shot pistol bullet and 36 gr. of BLC-2, the sound always turned heads! That load crono'd at just over 2,300 fps. I loaded only as heavy...
That's just juvenile, henchmen....No, I'm not talking about military projectiles.
No, there is NO - NADA - ZERO projectile that "tumbles". What a very sorry urban myth that prevails even within the shooting community.
What does happen is that the bullet spins about its axis with very little...
I used to be extremely aggravated, but now I'm just amused.
In these discussions about the practical range of .223/5.56, there's a huge amount of what amounts to urban myth.
FACT: The practical range of the caliber is limited to the point where the bullet retains enough velocity to...
Go ahead and "research" all you want, if that's an aspect of the sport that you enjoy.
I was using Castrol GTX for awhile in the AR, and found that Mobil 1 does indeed "stay wet" much longer. Someone asks why we want the AR to stay wet. Well, because it needs to! Try to work on your...
You can have a lot of fun with a 1 in 12 rifle. Long ago, I had a Win. Mod. 70 varminter with a 26" heavy barrel. For P-dogs, I settled on the 50 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip over 29 gr. of W-748 for an average MV of 3,500 fps. If I still had that rifle, I'd probably switch to TAC, for the...
heavydluxe- I believe that the Fed. brass you see is all from the "cheap" military load that is sold in bulk 100 packs. I haven't seen this in print, but I believe that the Fed. plant just runs with the mil. brass in case the Fed. source is needed in a surprise conflict. That way, nothing has...
Just 2 points here-
On another forum, someone found the primer cup thicknesses for all of the popular brands. I believe that CCI 400 was just .018", and known to be "soft". Most of the others are .020", but Rem. 6 1/2 is made of a softer material, and has a note on the box that warns against...
Weeelll... I'm a devout Blue Dot loader. I don't have a carbine, but I do have a Glock 19, 17 and 17L. My "standard" load uses the Rem. 124 gr. JHP with 7.8 gr. of Blue Dot. Averaged chrono results are:
G19: 1,250 fps
G17: 1,325 fps
G17L: 1,400 fps.
Oddly enough, using the brass...
Bearing surface is a big factor. Look at the section of the bullet that is engaged by the rifling, and notice that it's much longer on the 68 gr. bullet.
Also, there are more differences in the configuration of the bullet than may be apparent. The 68 gr. match bullet has a bit of "dead" space...
I read through different forums about wunderguns, and keep picking up my G-19 again. Every time, I decide that it stays. It has maybe 3,000 rounds thru it by me, with zero failures. I do get the occasional clonk on the forehead from fired brass. When that happens, I automatically go into...
You guyz who post your proud targets, or tell us about keeping your shots COM or whatever are absolutely in another universe.
We're talking about a life or death struggle situation here. The bad guy isn't going to stand there like a big paper target and wait until you're satisfied that you've...
I'm closer to "there" than I was. My center fire autos are all Glock 9's. Well, there is the LCP, but it just stays in the car. It's interesting to me to find that the 9 performs like 3 different calibers in the 3 different barrel lengths. In the 19, it's basically what we expect from the...
I don't think about anything but what I've landed on as my preference. I tried some hydrashok and some other stuff just to see that it feeds reliably. I found that the Rem. 92 gr. JHP in the Walmart 100 pack is the most violent to shoot, so I trust that the violence carries. I haven't...
I'm one of those guys who has only Glocks, but I did that on purpose.
Between the 19, 17 and 17L, the 17L is the most fun to shoot, just because it's the most accurate and powerful.
There really is a power difference. My standard handload uses the 124 gr. Rem. JHP with a good dose of Blue...
...anything to me. Each is the material response to a perceived need.
This whole argument about the cost of feeding an AR is just weird to me. You *can* abuse it, knowing that you're burning the throat out and stupidly throwing bullets all over the place, just the same as knowing that you...
I like my finger grooves. Call me weird, but I actually shoot my guns. The finger grooves help in keeping my grip the same for every shot. Keeping the grip the same helps in keeping the bullet going to point of aim.
I know it's weird, but that makes sense to me.
For your purpose, I would suggest the Weaver K-6. I bought one to try as a replacement for the 6~18 on my AR, but I can't see bullet holes with 6x beyond about 100 yards, so the Nikon went back on the AR.
The K-6 is only about $160 from Midway. It's very solid, with a 1 piece tube, and a...
There are just 2 basic AR configurations. Carbine, where I think too many people go, and rifle. I knew from the start that I wanted a high capacity varmint rifle that would fit in the back of my Subaru Forester. This is where it ended up:
That's the Weaver K-6 scope in the photo, but it...
I'm a little dismayed to see that the majority of AR owners go for the GI Joe approach. I went from a .223 bolt gun with a 26" barrel and 6~24 scope to my current AR. What I wanted was a high capacity varmint rifle, with 1 MOA accuracy out to 300 yards. That's exactly what I have. My "AR...
For me, it basically is already. I've had bigger bolt and single shot rifles in the past. I never got interested in shooting critters that required them.
I don't compete, and I don't consider my AR to be my defensive gun. I do have an AK, but that's kinda' just cuz. My AR is the one I fool...
