I have one of those round brass powder flasks that I have dedicated as a "filler" flask. I filled it with grits and got a 15 grain spout for it. That and 20 grains of fff bring the ball pretty close to the chamber mouth. Takes a little longer to load, but is cheaper than wads.
Liked your...
Thanks to all for your suggestions. I managed to fix the problem using three strips of .030" mild steel sheet about 1 1/2" long and cut and filed to be slightly wider than the hammer slot. I used the hammer and a small brass punch to press the strips into position (one strip at a time). The last...
Thanks for the replies. I may try to shorten the old hammer just to see how it goes. I knew defarb was not the right term but old age disallowed access to the correct reference. The pistol is so beat up I couldn't get $20 for it, so no sense in selling.
I'm sure I'll figure something out...
Thanks for your reply. It does it even without the spring installed. The hammer slot in the frame was apparently been de-farbed too much at the factory during manufacture so that the hammer extends too far forward into the cylinder space. Definitely much thinner here than on my other 1860s...
I have an old Pietta 1860 Army pistol that I used for many years before it developed too many problems to continue to shoot, and so it became a wall hanger. I've recently decided to give the 'ol girl another chance as she was a tack driver and I reckon guns should be shot rather than looked at...
Just an update and a pic of the progress. This store is at 144th st and I-25, about ten minutes from where I live. Rumor has it this store and the one in Parker are set to open Aug 15th. Can't wait!!
Would really like to have a little more info as to how you're doing this. Pics would help. Just how are you using the extension to accomplish the de-farb?
In expanding on what Old Fuff has written, sanitary conditions of the day weren't even close to what you have now. Consider just the bullets, balls or what-have-you themselves. Not considering pre-made ammo for the moment, most ammo was made in the field under the poorest of conditions, then...
Bumping this thread for the new folks just joining the show, already in progress. Use these to finish off your cap boxes just like Colt (and Remmie) did!
Sorry about the missing pics; I'd re-add them, but THR won't allow me to edit the thread anymore. At least the important bits (the labels)...
Colt did finish a few of the early 2nd gen ("C" series), then turned everything over to Lou Imperato and the gang in New York (finally making the "Address New York City" claim Colt had used for 150 years an honest statement) for final fit and finish ("F" series), and these are the same folks who...
Two new Cabela's are slated for the Denver area; one in Thornton (about ten minutes away by freeway :uhoh: ), the other in Lone tree. Here's part of a story issued by the Denver Post:
"Cabela's announced today that it plans to open two new stores in the Denver metropolitan area by next year...
I vote for the GPR as well. As mentioned, more authentic looking than the "Hawkens" kit and a great shooter. Lots of different locks and barrels available for it, too. You Will Not Be Sorry if you order one. :)
Nice looking piece, Mykeal.
Now, that would be interesting - like going full circle; to start and end with an ASM! I don't know if I'm quite ready to make a purchase yet, but I'll let you know...
And, BTW, the ASM I bought back in '82 or '83 cost me $75, used, from the local gun store! Nobody wanted BP pistols back then...
I would actually get a Paterson before the Walker if I could find one! I've lusted after one for years but never acquired one.
Thanks, Josie -er- ZZZ. You're right; stuff is stuff and people are family. As proven, these things can always be replaced!
Well, the Fender was a fairly new...
Thanks for the encouragement, DD! :) I actually was among the first to join the infamous "Walker Club" and posted this pic of the wall placque: 3rd gen Walker; 3rd gen Dragoon; 2nd gen Army; Navy Arms (Uberti) "Custer" model SAA
You can imagine what a space the missing Walker leaves...
I've had three Walkers in the last thirty years, and I just don't seem to be able to keep them! I have other pistols I've had for nearly as long and never given a second thought to, but the Walkers all seem to slip out of my grip! What's the deal?!!
Bought the first one in the mid '80s - an...
I saw that show, too, and was bothered by the same attitude; that a .36 caliber ball won't kill a man, just slow him down. HeII, a .22 will kill you if you're hit the right spot!
Everyone is forgetting Wild Bill's shot at Davis Tutt at 75 yards. It could have been a fluke, but it still had...
