IMHO, a 12ga shotgun is way too much gun for a women of that age with no shooting experience. Even young women find shotguns difficult to handle due to stock length, weight, and fear of recoil. Consider trading the shotgun for a compact rifle (Mini 14 would be good) or a revolver.

Is it ejecting the spent shells? Has he check the o-ring for damage? Could be a weak gas seal.
Also, what type of load is he shooting? If he's shooting light loads, it may not be creating enough gas pressure to drive the bolt fully back.

My 452 trigger was heavy with noticeable creep until I installed an Eric Brooks trigger kit on it. Now it breaks cleanly at 2 lbs with no creep. It's perfect.
That's a beauty! My dad has a Light 12 he bought around 1960. Sadly, he had a Polychoke installed on it and those things are butt ugly. Otherwise, it's in good shape and had never been fired much. I love old Brownings.
