    7.62x39 v. 7.62x51 short range wounding differences

That’s not entirely true. Russian military contractors make composite armor now. Cardboard glued to pot metal. That way it is heavy enough. Contractors are paid by the pound and cardboard is too light to scam the defense ministry that much! Plus, when you’re outfitting a chain smoking...

Here's a new one on me-

That seems very Japanese to do. It’s elegant and practical for the job, but more importantly it has no history behind it. The Garand is the weapon that defeated them. The Arisaka is the weapon that committed atrocities against their neighbors (it turns out no one voluntarily joined the Greater...

I have a strange fascination with Milsurps...

I’ve been cleaning up stocks on two that fit this thread lately. The MAS 36 that was a bit late for the big show but saw a lot of use in Algeria, Syria, and Indochina. I’m pretty sure mine spent most of its life sitting with the metal butt on a cold concrete floor in a French armory waiting for...

    wonder why no 7.62 creed

We have had a century of trying to get something better than a 30-06 in a shorter package. 300 Savage could get close enough with light bullets. 308 had the advantage of military adoption and mass production. I feel it’s easier to displace an uncommon cartridge like 6.5x55 or 260 Rem for small...

    rock salt: Lethal or not

If you load one with rock salt, the second with peppercorn, and the third with birdshot, you should be able to bring down a bird and season it in the field. It’s probably most useful used As a filler to make back pressure on the wad and shot in the air as a blank to scare off roving critters. I...

Looking for information on where to find information: SMLE No1MkIII* and the internet has been less than helpful

I can’t recall where I’ve looked in the past. I do remember 2-3 decent sites with enough information to figure the markings out on mine. If you have some pictures of the key markings I suspect you could get a quick answer around here.

I’ve got a Savage 340 in 222. I’m having decent performance with 50gr Hornady soft points and Ramshot X-Terminator

Dud rounds: a cogent explanation for one leading cause

Ive had cleaning solvent dud powder before seeping in from an over oiled chamber. Never a primer problem. It looks like they’re selling celluloid strips here. I wonder how effective plastic cling film would be. It might be awful but primers are energetic enough to pop it.

Lee neck sizing die for same caliber but different cartridge

I did remember I have a plan C option. I forgot about the ancient Belding and Mull neck sizers I have. They are older than the 7.5 MAS cartridge design but would work and don’t depend on cartridge length. I‘ll check with Lee on the die. It’s not urgent, so it’ll go on the roundtoit list.

Lee neck sizing die for same caliber but different cartridge

I’ve looked up the Lee die issue. It’s a known issue (that I didn’t know when buying them). The body is too small and cases feel close to stuck. I suspect they work for fireformed converted brass but not the real thing. 7.5 MAS has an unusual head size but really normal neck size. I do think...

Lee neck sizing die for same caliber but different cartridge

I generally like Lee dies and have no problems with them, but I did finally find the one that they just got wrong: the 7.5 MAS sizing die. I’m pretty sure it’s just a 300 Savage or 308 die with slight modifications by the amount it oversizes brass. I only have one rifle in the cartridge (MAS...

    What's wrong with this picture?

Sergio Leone did great work in entertaining cinematography. Historical accuracy was not his strong point.

    Blown primers on win brass

I’d consider trying to save them if they were a hard To get cartridge like 250 Savage. 243 is common enough to buy new or wait for less questionable range pick up brass to come along.

Plated bullet data = lead? = jacketed?

I’ve found Berry‘s pistol bullets work well with starting to mid range jacketed data. My first attempt with the 30-30 bullets had them shed the plating in flight with mid range jacketed loads (should have been below 2000 fps).

    7.62x39 v. 7.62x51 short range wounding differences

If were stuck with fmj military ammo, there may be less difference at close range. Technically the 7.62 Soviet will make a slightly larger (0.310 vs 0.308) hole. If we can vary bullets, the 7.62 NATO will always come out on top for terminal ballistics at a given range. It just has more energy...

    Another ID these rounds

Try to spin the bullet in the Turkish ammo. About 1 in 10 I have (1943) has a neck split and it will turn freely. They have some interesting powder with square flakes and it seems almost compressed under a 154gr bullet. Turkey stockpiled a lot of 7.9 Mauser during the war. They also stayed...

    Case lube fail

That must be getting pretty warm. I keep mine in the garage in South-Central Texas. Most of the summer temperatures in the garage average 87-90 degrees and no problems there.

    Hornady Unique case lube

I use it in my carbide dies too. Usually coat the first one, then pick each case up with my fingers getting some residual lube on them until sizing feels a bit harder. Then I dab the container and go again. Usually only needs some every 5-10 cases. It cleans out easily enough too. A cotton swab...
