How to initially choose a powder when starting out?

I'm not really a brand snob, but I like what I like. When I was looking for different powders to try, I just moved up and down the Hercules (yes, that's how old I am...) lineup and picked another powder. You could say the same about Hodgdon, Accurate, Winchester, and other powder brands...

= Verified with PV/Alliant customer service = Alliant to suspend canister powders significantly - Time for comparable powder substitutions again

It also happened with my .45ACP brass in a mid-range load. I would have to go back and find the other pictures I took of them to see what brass they were in... very likely Winchester or Midway (Starline.) The pic with the 4 primers are from my .45ACP rounds. I'm not saying you are wrong about...

Gun powder. It's a beautiful sight to see.

I would opine that most of that Alliant powder is gone by now... ;)

AH! That makes more sense, now. WST and BE-86 are not at opposite ends of the spectrum, but they certainly are not kissing cousins. Yep.

Quite true. I'm hoarding my last 50 .41 GoldDots like they are... well... gold. I hadn't considered that... that would be terrible, indeed. That might actually force me to go back to those horrible Winchester primers. WST as a replacement for BE-86?

How to initially choose a powder when starting out?

+1 I lucked out... I picked the best powder ever made, that works across almost every handgun round extant... Unique. ;) I lucked out a second time... I asked the counter guy for a powder to load for my Garand... he handed me a can of IMR4895. All humor aside, we live in the age of...

I remember seeing ads for Royal Scot in G&A back in the day. I don't know if I've ever seen a can of that in the wild...

What have you done in the reloading room today

There are a few mainstays... those are two of them, TiteGroup is another, even if I don't personally like it, it does work well in some applications... 9mm, for example. Let me try N140, first... ;)

What have you done in the reloading room today

I did that during the last powder shortage. Although I wound up with 2 powders I really liked... RedDot and IMR4227... I also wound up with horrible TiteGroup, which just hangs around like a cold sore. You might make a list of powders you might want to pick up... using published data as a...

45acp 230gr RN Different Bullet Length Also Means Different Ogive?

Funny that you would say that. For years I've been shooting the .41's indoors, with cast bullets and Unique. The last session really got to me... the Cloud of Death I call it.... and I decided to take action! I'm not actually a huge fan of plated bullets, but they are less expensive than...

45acp 230gr RN Different Bullet Length Also Means Different Ogive?

Casting costs time and space... I have not enough of either. Further... I love shooting cast bullets, but I really have no interest in making my own. It's sort of like shooting black powder... I admire those who do it, marveling at the skill and technique... but I'm not running out to buy a...

45acp 230gr RN Different Bullet Length Also Means Different Ogive?

I'm right there with you... ;) I've tried SWC's in my .45's... and while they produced decent accuracy, the odd feeding issue would rear it's head now and then.... so I just load and shoot RN bullets, now.

45acp 230gr RN Different Bullet Length Also Means Different Ogive?

I don't think Berrys are all that good, either, but I don't buy plated bullets for strictly accuracy purposes. Berrys has brand recognition, that goes a long way, even if it's a mediocre product. I like the Hornady sleeve design... but it does have it's moments. I like that Redding... just...

= Verified with PV/Alliant customer service = Alliant to suspend canister powders significantly - Time for comparable powder substitutions again

Well, Hodgdon owns Winchester powder, or at least the distribution as such, I would think any trademarks would have came with the deal... but I'm not a patent or trademark lawyer. According to LV Gun, Hodgdon told him flake powder would be scarce... 'flake' is nowhere near ball or spherical...

Say what? AFAIK, most military small arms powder is ball powder, not flake. WC844 and WC846 in 5.56mm and 7.62mm, respectively... H335 and BL-C(2) to we civilians.

I'm going to give it a try... if the stars align... when I'm looking/when I have the money/when it's in stock... ;) Scheels sold me an 8# of IMR4227 for $277 about 6 months ago... I had to ask twice if that was the right price, and I double-checked the receipt when the girl scanned it...

I avoid I-35 if there is any way possible.... it's just such a trainwreck.
