...cocked it - it was missing the 1st click of the 3 clicks. My heart sank as I looked to verify my suspicions. There it was: the transfer bar. The #&*^@%!& transfer bar.
I "inspected" it, I accepted it, I took possession of it. I own it and every bit of it's neutered glory. Now, I plan on...
I went through the exact same search for the 10/22 in WMR, but the guns i found were in the $1500 range - too rich for my blood! After looking around, i found the rifle made by Magnum Research. I own and love a couple of their Desert Eagle line of firearms and heard great things about it. It’s...
15.7gr of 2400 with a 300gr bullet is the max for a rifle round from what I’ve seen in multiple manuals. Something about the 300gr pill and longer barrels that make a hotter charge a bad combo. Take some measurements from a 300gr XTP and your hard cast and see how much seating depth difference...
I've never tried 800X, but if it's anything like 700X I understand. I weigh every charge since I load on a single stage, but on a progressive press it'd be a little more worrisome for me. 700X (or Green Dot) in 44spl is really nice, though.
Nosler's #6 manual shows 800X as a good powder for the bullet in 44mag. They show 3 rifle loads from a Ruger 18.5" barrel: 11.6gr (1317fps), 12.1gr (1356fps) and 12.6gr (1398fps - best accuracy). Listed OAL=1.610"
I like 2400 myself because of it's versatility. Max load for a 240gr XTP is...
I'd actually never heard of the plunk test until now - that's brilliant! I'm going to start using that more often in my reloading. Thank you!!
I agree on the short seating depth. I thought 1.200" was kinda short myself, but published data is usually credible. Good to know I'm not alone on that...
I've just started reloading for .45 Auto and am doing a lot a extrapolation and interpretation of powder, bullets and seating depths. Can you more experienced 45 loaders please give these loads a look and let me know if I'm out of bounds anywhere?
I've come up with these numbers from 6-7 books...
This is such sad news! He gave me so many great pointers and was always so happy to help everyone out. To me, he was the heart of THR and the reason for visiting so often. He will be sorely missed.

I wouldn't go more than 22.8gr of 4227 with a magnum primer if the recommended load is 24gr. Always back off the load by 5% when substituting magnum primers.

I've tried more than enough powders in the .44 caliber to make my mind up as to what I personally like. I tried 4227, but the loads I came up with were compressed loads and that gave me inconsistency. I've never tried H110 or W296 due to the narrow load window.
I've settled on 2400 for the...
I load with a Forster single stage press and load for consistency for both pistol and rifle. My scale is a RCBS Chargemaster 1500, so I weigh every charge. If there's a discrepancy, I stop to figure it out and fix before I start again.
For OAL, I measure every round until I'm confident...
Finding a load that works well in your weapon is the first step. Once you do that, pay attention to every aspect and reproduce all your variables as consistently as possible.
Consistency is accuracy.

For years I've stuck to 44 magnum revolvers with a 200gr XTP 44 special load for home defense. I kept the charge high enough to perform, but low enough to keep it under 1050 fps to keep it subsonic. I'll take this in my super blackhawks to protect my family any day. But...
I've recently...
I've standardized on 2400 and Unique for my 44 caliber loads. I've always thought AA #9 was a bit too much fire for my liking. 4227 can be inaccurate or super accurate depending on your bullet choice - full 4227 loads will sometimes require compressed loads which I prefer to stay away from.
I...
I've never been comfortable leaving both eyes completely open while maintaining a sight picture. I don't close my weak eye completely, moreover just squint with it. I can do both eyes open, but I hit my mark more often if I don't. But all that goes away using red dot.
I was able to talk my wife into letting me get the Trijicon RMR 3MOA red dot for my Desert Eagle.
The only concern I have with it is getting used to the sight acquisition. If you don't have the feel for it, finding the red dot at arm's length can be tricky. Once you find it though, it's...
