I inherited a bunch of reloading supplies and loaded ammo when my grandfather passed away. Among this was a bunch of 270 130 grain Hornady spire point ammo and components (likely from the 1980's). They shoot well out of my gun but I had total jacket separation on a broadside 75 yard shot on a...
I’ve had several situations when hunting from a tree stand where a deer will come from my weak side and I’ve had to shoot left handed. You can’t do that with a thumb hole stock.
No, I don’t believe so. It has a muzzle break and kicks less than a .270. I have good shooting technique and have been bench shooting for 20+ years. I’ve shot up to 1000 yards with specialized equipment on occasions in the past.
I’ve always read a lot of great things about Savage accuracy but...
Why do you say it’s OBVIOUSLY not the ammo? The action is pillar bedded, the barrel is floated, and it has brand new glass. I’ve checked the other variables as well. I’m a pretty good bench rest shooter and am not recoil sensitive. The same day I shot several sub-MOA groups with another rifle.
I assume you are referring to COAL? I'm setting the COAL at the manual recommended specs per each manufacturer of the bullet that I am using. I'm planning on taking the best load to Africa next year so I want to have a little wiggle room for changes in weather, humidity, etc.
I have a Savage 116 stainless 338 Win Mag and I’ve tried multiple loads in an attempt to find an accurate load. So far it seems to like 250 grain Speer Grand Slams the best but the best I’m getting is about 1.75” groups at 100 yards. The gun was actually given to me by my father and I suspect it...
I was at Bass Pro today and came across some 250 grain Sako 338 Hammerhead ammo marked way down. It says it is a bonded bullet. I bought a box to try it out. Anyone have any experience with this? From what I can tell Sako ammo is very well respected globally.
I tested 3 loads of IMR4350 with the 3 bullets and hands down the most accurate was the 250 grain Speer Grand Slam. I’ve read very positive reviews on some Alaskan forums and MidwayUSA reviews are great for this bullet. Would anyone have reservations about using this bullet on plains game?
Anyways, this thread cannot stay on topic. I started it asking for recommendations on specific bullets. Then it took a big tangent about premium vs cup and core bullets. Now people are discussing muzzle brakes and professional hunters. I’ll do test loads OF THE ORIGINAL 3 BULLETS I asked about...
It came factory installed so it’s coming with the gun. I imagine the PH has heard much louder and powerful guns than my 338. We’ve used it in groups while whitetail, elk, and mule deer hunting and have never thought twice about it.
Really the only time I’ve ever even experienced ringing in my...
So, the 338 I’m planning on using is actually my Dad’s. It’s been in my possession for a little while. My 40th birthday is coming up soon. I saw him a couple days ago and he said, “Happy birthday, why don’t you just keep that rifle.” So now I’m the proud owner of a nice stainless Savage 116...
All I’ve used the past 10-12 years is the old school woodland camo bdu pants and an earth tone flannel shirt or an old Cabelas Gore-Tex jacket in woodland pattern. I tend to kill more (and bigger) critters than most other people I know. Having “woods knowledge” seems to be more valuable than...
Question for those who’ve been to Africa. How much walking do you usually do? I thought about bringing my ‘06 for the smaller stuff since it is very light and easy to carry.
