    Florida gator season opens.........

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is a kind of long story that explains why Louann is in the water.......mostly revolving around a old back, a block & tackle, a locked hatch, and a forgotten key. And yes, there was a spare key in the...

    Treestand book help.

Someone suggested the "Federalist Papers".....well worth reading. As a companion to them I'd highly suggest the "Anti-Federalist Papers". No, that is not a joke. The Anti-Federalist Papers are exactly what they sound like they are. They are a compilation of articles published in...

    Worth thinking about...........

This is a article from the Univ. of Florida Forest Stewardship Newsletter. http://www.sfrc.ufl.edu/Extension/FFSnl/ffsnl182.pdf I know we talk coyotes on here a lot but I don't know if we in the Southeast understand how IMPORTANT it may actually be for us to work on them. Could be that...

Foolish to go hog hunting with a single-shot rifle?

This is one she shot this spring......at about 15 yards......after stalking it on the ground for a ways. Over the last dozen years that little .243 Win has put 20 or so on the ground, all but one shot while slipping through the swamps or in the palmettos. Normally I hear the rifle go off and...

    show off your hog guns!!!!!!!!!

Ruger Red Label 45-70.........yes that is a 45-70. It started life as a 20ga. Barrels were cut off at front of monoblock, new rifled ones sweated in, rib added, chambers reamed and the whole mess regulated to where she prints the barrels about 3/4 inchs apart at 50 yards.

    Kind of surprising...........

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So we went out to the woods yesterday ( Palatka, Fl. ) to check the game cams, ride the fence and put up some posted signs. In one area where I stoped the truck to check a spot where the brother in law had tossed...

    20 Gauge Slug Experience?

Wife had a NEF with a 20ga slug barrel that goes on after the deer season is over. ( WMAs here in FL have a rule where hogs can be hunted after the deer season but not with rifles. ) She's has used the Hornady sabot, 260 grain if I remember, on a fair number of them. As someone said it is...

    Define "Hunting"

Hunting: A very good excuse to be cold, hot, wet, tired, bug bit, covered in poison ivy and late for dinner.......but if you take the wife the last one does not matter.

    Georgia Hog Hunting (Question)

This should start a controversy............and I'll begin. While I think you are WRONG about the wild hog meat, it's better than venison, I would say that if the area you are thinking about hunting has a identified hog problem then what you propose is not wholy unreasonable. But...

    Rifle Alligator hunt in FL

Dead gators sink...... If you don't anchor him you are risking wasting a good bit of fine meat. I would strongly suggest something you can shoot VERY well. Study their anatomy as you would any animal where a humain kill was the goal. When we harvest them we set the bangstick off at the...

    fresh pork..

From the picture it looks like your hogs there are lean this time of year just as ours are here in NE FL. They do fatten up later don't they???? Ours do some but not like the ones that have access to agriculturial products. They still taste great!

    What hogs are good for.........

Brother in law head shot this one with the intention of us doing it with the skin on..........but as he left me to deal with it ( he's smarter than I am! ) and did not say anything I just skinned it. Used a rub with a good bit of salt and spice in it. Put that on the night before. One of...

    What hogs are good for.........

Yes I know they can get way out of hand and do great damage. That said if we could just get a few more folks to focus on something other than horns we might keep the hogs under control...... Brother in law shot this one on Friday evening. The first picture is about sunrise on Sunday. You can...

    Best Hunting Caliber?

Wife has taken a good number of hogs and deer with a .243. As someone said, use a GOOD bullet and it will work fine. Real nice part about it is that you can get it in a youth sized rifle that even for a adult is very easy to use in a tree stand and in thick cover.........

    30-30 for squirrels

Years ago, 30 or so, my father reloaded half-jacket 110 grain slugs at very low velosities to do just what you suggest. Worked fine and as the slugs did not expand I don't remember any meat getting messed up. I do think though that he was under 1000 FPS with them. And this too......I...
