Ditto on the hip.

I have fired both the PPS 9 and 40. The 9mm is a pleasure to shoot but the .40's recoil makes for an unpleasant shooting experience.

I have fired large quantities of both and prefer CCI Blazer Brass. They are both fairly equal but I lean toward CCI.

S&W 3913 gets my vote.

Increase your budget by about $100 and get a S&W 3913. They are a pure joy to shoot and as reliable as anything out there.

I have always been able to shoot a revolver,double action, better then a semi auto. Probably because I learned to shoot with revolvers.

I think that any training or competition that requires you to draw, aim and shoot under timed conditions is helpful. You need to learn that your gun may not come out of your holster smoothly or your aim may not be true under stress. IDPA is very similar to the police training I am familiar with...

Currently I shoot at a private range about 7 miles from my house. I'm not aware of any public ranges close by. When I lived in Ohio the Dept. of Natural Resources operated several outdoor public ranges around the state. One of which was about 28 miles away. It had a pistol range, rifle range and...
