    heart rate control, etc.

Report back Hi all- Just returned from MT from my first elk hunt. I used the 168 Barnes TTSX in 300 WSM. I shot a 5x6 bull at 300 yards, broadside. This was after hauling ass up a hill and getting set up within 15 seconds. My first shot took him square behind the shoulder in the sweet...

Peter- Thanks for the advice. That link is predominantly in German, and it's been 20 years since I've had a meaningful conversation auf Deutsch, and my reading German, like my shooting, is a perishable skill. I'll go with your dry fire recommendations, I have snap caps for my .300 and I can...

    heart rate control, etc.

Thanks for the replies. For those who posted about the responsibility of a 600 yard shot, it helps to actually read the question before pontificating...I'm quite comfortable hunting at 300, any condition (besides dark or super high winds) provided I'm comfortable with the rest, etc. It's...

    heart rate control, etc.

Thank you for your service, Apache Co. For those who have no formal, non civilian training, can anyone recommend a video or reading as to how to do this? I'm 41, in good shape (could pass PFT for my age bracket) so I am able deal with the rigors of low O2 levels. I'm just looking to...

    heart rate control, etc.

I'm sure this subject has been discussed a lot, but the search function was overwhelming. I'm preparing to go elk hunting this fall, I've shot about 400 rounds through my .300 WSM. Off a good rest, I'm sub MOA at 300 yards. My challenge is holding steady beyond that. I can consistently hit...

    Tikka Accuracy

I have a Tikka T3 laminated in 300 WSM. This group is at 307 yards. Rem brass, barnes TTSX 168's on top of 70 grains of RL 22. Should work for elk.

    resizing 300 WSM

Walkaolng- That was a teriffic thread...I learned a lot. What do you think my chances are of convincing my wife I need a lathe? I only have 8 kids 12 and under, so I have plenty of spare time... Thanks again for the guidance. bob

    resizing 300 WSM

That was the answer I was looking for. I had never heard of "bump sizing" vs. FL or neck sizing. I will do this and compare groups. I just hated to think of having to FL size the tighter brass and lose the full advantage of fire sized brass. I'm probably splitting hairs, and the loads are...

    resizing 300 WSM

Having not measured .002" bump, can I do the same thing with a dial caliper? or is it just a matter of incrementally adjusting your die until the shell just chambers easily? Thanks for the reply

    resizing 300 WSM

Need some guidance here. I'm on my 5th loading of my 300 wsm brass and I notice the bolt is becoming "snug" to close. (Tikka T3stainless) I've only neck sized to this point, with only one round of trimming to length. Last night I FL resized one case andit chambered easily again. My...

sight in question...I should know this

Geno- Thanks for the heads up. It's a good website. I just need to learn a lot and shoot more. Theory is fine to me, but I've only put about 200 rounds through the rifle, 300 yards max. I'll validate what the website says with real data.

sight in question...I should know this

Well, my reload is where I want it in terms of velocity and MOA. I'm gonna leave mine zeroed at 300, which is 3.5" high at 100, zero at 300 and 10" down at 400. That's easy math for me and should work with my reticle set up. Now I just need to keep in powder and primers. Hope an elk walks...

The reticle is about 1.5" above the muzzle....roughly.

    Elk hunting fitness

R E: Thanks. Ya, I've narrowed down the cause.. I just find that we're exceptionally good at it. Eight kids, 11 and under. I wouldn't trade it for the world, as each one is a gift. And their mother still talks to me!! Lets hope I survive elk hunting....

Resist Evil: sorry to hear about your bad experience. I'm glad you're back hunting, where you belong! Thanks for the insight, guys. I'm 40 now, and have a year and a month to get ready. I will incorporate this advice. My wife is due with our 8th child in November...so I'll need a year to...

sight in question...I should know this

Primal MU- I assume that because the program states the bullet is still travelling upward at 200 yards, and that cannot happen unless the rifle is "angled" upwards. You bring up a great point...Thank you for phrasing my question better than I did. It would be nice to know how to deterine the...

Sighting in 300 WSM using barnes 168TTSX at a muzzle velocity of 3080 fps. The rifle is a Tikka T3 stainless with a Leopould VX3 4.5-14 scope. How do I know where the "zero" is on the rifle? I'm trying to get correct ballistics info. Here's what I have now: My point of impact is 3.7...

    velocity drop in 300 wsm

Check me on this: Loading a 168 Barnes TTSX and getting just under 3200 fps with .75 - 1.0 MOA...which is great for me. I upped the charge by a .5 grain and noticed a velocity DROP by 100 fps with inconsistent chronograph readings. Groups were about same. Using RL22, 71 grains, compressed...

    Elk hunting fitness

Going elk hunting for the first time in MT next year. The question is how do you recommend getting in shape for the hills? I'm in Minnesota, and in Ok shape...can run 3 miles in 22 minutes and weight train regularly, but we have plenty of air here in flat country. For those who have been...

    Scope eye relief

Thanks guys. I'm gonna slide it back about a 3/4". I agree with the idea that the scope stays on lowest setting unless I have time to set up the shot. Not knowing what I'll be in for, (terrain, etc) the default will be the lowest setting. Now it's time for practice to 500 yards...I'll...
