Need help designing a Reloading bench

I know it's an old thread but..... I saw in the current issue of Handloadera bench (and plans) from Baldy Mountain Enterprises. What I like is that everything is behind closed doors or in drawers (my set-up is in the family room, so I need to keep it clean and keep the stuff out of tiny...

    Do you reload?

yep Started after my daughter was born. I needed something to do that was quite when she was sleeping....I'm usually up late. About every male in my family loads, so I had lots of knowledge to draw from and lots of hand-me-downs and gifts. I actually enjoyed loading more than shooting, but...

38 special crimp in brass, remington brass

OK I'm no expert by any means, but I've asked the same questions before and was told they're OK to use. I was told that was actually called a cannelure (just like the one on the projectile) and that it is there to hold the bullet in the case during production. What I pictured was that...

    Chronograph problems

What I tried The sun was pretty low...coming in at about 9-10:00 from the unit. I tried with and without the diffusers, checked the connection of the cable on both ends. Now don't laugh!!!!! My friend noticed I had the unit bass ackwards....the back towards me. I thought for sure that was...

    Chronograph problems

I have a Beta model that I had some trouble with this weekend. It was only the 2nd time I’ve used it (bought it new)…the first time it worked great. This time, the readings I was getting were extremely low. I was shooting a .45 ACP and measure velocities between 170 and 211 fps. It was...

    223 load results question

ssyoumans...I thought about that and when I came back home I took a bullet from each of the containers (25.5 and 26 gr.) and took them apart to re-weigh the powder...They were labeled correctly. cougar1717...Sorry, I meant to say the chronograph I was renting from the range before I used this...

    223 load results question

More info Thanks for the suggestions. I did measure 3 different factory loads (again, a string of 5 to get an average). They were all 55 gr. FMJ BT projectiles as were my reloads. Here is the average velocity for a string of 5 rounds for each powder load. Chorograph was about 10' away...

    223 load results question

Last winter I loaded some 223 with 55 gr. FMJ BT. I trimmed all the cases to the same length (1.755") and loaded to the same overal length (2.223"). I crimped all of the rounds without moving the die at all and I charged with Varget from 23 gr. to 26 gr. in .5 gr. intervals. I was able yo...

    Bullet puller?

taper They're .45 ACP with taper crimp and clad bullets. I tried seating a few of them deeper, but the case cut into the cladding on a couple of them, so I thought I should pull them.

    Bullet puller?

I messed up and loaded 100 or so rounds too long. They're already crimped so I don't think I can just re-seat them. My question is, do you think a bulet puller "die" for the press is worth the cost, o rshould I just stick with the inertia puller? I tend to see powder come out of the top of...

intruder with a knife-nearly shot him

I guess my opinion is different than most others. Of course it's easy to say now, but this situation could have been (and was) dealt with without involving the police. The OP had a problem on his property and he dealt with it on his own. Obviously not 100% wrong...this one worked out OK...

intruder with a knife-nearly shot him

He did not try to escalate to violence, he only asked what the "offender" wanted. He investigated a situation on his property. He was not acting like a macho fool and I didn't infer he was. Further, he didn't "rush" him, he went onto the porch once the "offender" had left the porch and was in...

intruder with a knife-nearly shot him

Great example Not that my opinion matters, and I'm sure I'll get some bashing for it, but I think in this instance Greywolf444 is an epitome of a real man. He recognized a person with a need and did what he could to assist that person and did so at personal risk. Something else worth...

Slugged my barrels, now have more questions

Oh....I see...getting closer now The tight barrel is a S&W Alaskan Backpacker (model 329 I think). Steve was right...only 5 grooves on that barrel and the others had 6. It looks to me as though the slugs bottomed in the groove though, the edges were nice and sharp anf you can see on the high...

Slugged my barrels, now have more questions

So I'm going to try casting some bullets. We decided to start with .44 mag and melted down some wheel weights and cast some ingots. We're getting ready to cast some bullets and decided maybe we should slug the barrels of the different guns. Of 5 guns, all were the same (.428)...except for one...

    Trimmer pilot question

Shorter base I ended up mounting the pilot in the drill press and polishing it down to get it to work. Once I did that, no more problems. 196....Forster has a shorter base that will facilitate your smaller brass if you still want to trim them. I don't know though if it is too short for...

    Trimmer pilot question

Well.... I tried expanding some tonight, even so far as to flare the case just a little as if I were ready to place the bullet and still no go. Took the expander out of the die and it measured ~.4255...I measured the pilot OD and it measured the same. Looks like I need to reduce the size of...

    Trimmer pilot question

I tried recently to trim some .44 mag and 9mm brass. The .44 brass was sized by myself and someone else and both of us ussed RCBS carbide dies. trimmed the 9mm brass again using RCBS carbide dies. When I tried to trim the brass, the pilots for the trimmer were EXTREMELY tight in the brass...

    Powder burn rate

Yesterday, I posted a question asking if anyone had any load info for a short barrel .44 mag "Short barrel .44 mag load" and I ended up even more confused. I was thinking the load for the same bullet between a 7 1/2" barrel and a 2 1/2" barrel would use different powders to optimize velocity...
