Are Feral cats a major problem in the rural US?

The Audubon society claims feral house cats are the largest killer of endangered bird species. I have hunted on more than one place where cats were to be shot on sight. They are very hard on quail and other ground nesting birds. Here in town my next door neighbor feeds them, and we have had as...

Have you ever wished you had "more gun"

The only time i wished i had more gun was on a quail hunt in NW Texas. We were on a large ranch camping when the ranch mgr drove up. He told us they were way over populated with jackrabbits and coyotes and he wouldn't mind if we killed a few of either. So 3 of us younger guys (this was 1985 or...

Not again.......! Feral Hog Control in East Texas

Hope you get paid good on the wells. Gas wells correctly operated are not too big of a pain, if there are regular checks in the mailbox.

    Mossberg Model 142k

I have a semi auto version, M153 i believe. It is heavy for a .22. Mine doubles on occasion, so i don't take it out much. Need to fix that. Got it at a pawn shop, need to look into why these guns will do that. Wood is in very good condition, and the plastic "finger grip" isn't warped on mine, as...

    22 WMR handgun for critters

Guy's with suppressors on .22 pistols find that high velocity ammo that makes 1200 to 1250 fps in a rifle will do 1050 to 1100fps in a 40 to 6 inch pistol. They will shop for brands that are subsonic, as "standard velocity .22 ammo is usually target ammo, which is more expensive. 40 gr. .22 mag...

As I removed my blood-soaked hand from my face...

I had a .22lr fire out of battery in my 10-22 that i allowed the chamber to get dirty. I was actually running a shoot until fail test to see how long it would run. I believe the modified chamfered bolt was why it could fire slightly out of battery. I was impressed by the amount of gas that came...

Real world plinking 25 yard 22LR ammo comparison with hot barrel (Ruger 10/22 Collector #3 break in)

.22 ammo. I have found that while testing ammo, the type of lube the bullet has makes a difference. When you shoot 50 or so rounds of ammo A, the next 15 to 30 rounds of ammo B, will still be running on some of the lube from ammo A. Example, I would shoot a hundred rounds of Wolf match target...

My apologies to Mr. Browning and Winchester

A lot of the old .22's I have are orange tinted also. On rimfire central they talk about matching that, in the few they actually refinish. Same with the blueing, if it is severly pitted, they attempt to match the metal finish Winchester used at that time. But, they would rather leave original...

    22 LR Case Splitting

I migrated away from remington .22 bullets40 years ago. Even back then they were not as reliable and very dirty. Today I prefer Federal or CCI. Winchester 3rd place. For accuracy I go Wolf match target for reasonable priced .22. for real match ammo you must spend a lot more money. The panic...

How much does your deer rifle actually weigh?

My weatherby mkv ultralight in 25-06. that's my refrigerant scale, fairly accurate but pricy just to weigh a rifle.

Where are you casters getting your lead?

On cast boolits there is a lady that sells range lead delivered to your house in a priority mail box. She has given upon wheel weights due to the scarcity of lead in them. She goes by "the captain" I have bought from her in the past, and I leave a two wheeler out for the postman and let him know...

Loading for 10 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk

I had one of these. Normal 240 gr. magnum loads are easy to shoot. Now when you load and push 310gr loads fast, it is a little more to handle, but doable. If you have not shot one much, beware of the dragoon trigger guard. Put your little finger under the grip, and hold the grip with the next 2...

Have you ever snuck up on a turkey while deer hunting?

Sitting up on a bluff south of Brownwood during deer season I saw the largest flock I have ever seen. I counted 35 and I wasn't a fourth of the way through. All hens. We could shoot hens in that county during deer season, but I have not had much luck recovering enough of one shot with a deer...

    On the Fence with Interlock

I have seen several write ups on forums in the last two weeks complaining of 6.5 creed 143gr ELDx bullets not performing well on closer (100 yds or less) shots on deer. Some saying the exit is the same size as entrance, no expansion, little to no blood trails. If that were the case then they...

Into the woods before first light...duh!

My brother shot a .308 out of his .270 M700. Didn't hurt the rifle any. Had gunsmith check, and a friend in the metal inspection biz x-rayed it for him.

    First cast with PID

I use mine for running an electric smoker, using a different thermocouple so lead isn't an issue. Just disconnect the lead pot tcouple, and connect the smoker tcouple. An electric smoker and an amazing pellet smoker makes good bbq, easy peasy. May just build another one for the smoker.

    Albino squirrels?

Saw piebald squirrels when deer hunting in S. Alabama back in the mid 80's. I think they had an albino deer in the office at the wma. Barbour County.

    Outdated binoculars

I like a good pair of binoculars. I am not a binocular snob, but cannot afford swaros. :Picked up a pair of vortex talon 10 x 42's on clearance a few years back, and am well satisfied. But I would have alpha glass if money wasn't an object.
