    Build a AR?

Tips are pretty easy, don’t spare the tools! For me that’s punches (including roll pin), a Magpul BevBlock, a properly sized hammer (small), a bench vise, and a good armorer’s wrench. You can round these things up for around $225-$250. Finally, and highly suggested, would be a lapping tool...

Most inaccurate rifle I've shot in a long time, and it's a head-scratcher.

Honestly I’ve found the opposite to be true. A few locals yes, competitive shooters no. I have seen the best local guys mentor complete newbs who were shooting 1/4” groups at 200 yards a few years later. They offer information, it’s not always well received, and I think that is simply a...

Most inaccurate rifle I've shot in a long time, and it's a head-scratcher.

@Trey Veston this is what I was getting at; seeing a guy with sensible goals of 3-shot Sporter groups and printing well under 1” had me thinking you’ve got the knack, while the bipod on a bag meant you probably weren’t a full-time student. No shame in that, I’d bet on you to outshoot me any...

Most inaccurate rifle I've shot in a long time, and it's a head-scratcher.

How did this thread get so off track…looking forward to seeing what it can do once properly tuned. I suppose if I did have a question at this point it would be the capability of the current owner. I can imagine an award winning rifleman passing on skills to his son, but at present we’ve...

    A takedown 22LR bolt rifle

I’ve definitely found a project worthy of the time I’ll be investing, very nice! I once owned THE perfect rifle sent down from the heavens above, a Savage Cub T. Once my son was fit for a full size rifle I snatched it up proclaiming it would never be sold. True to my word it was not, but I...

Has anyone gone to the Sonoran Desert Institute?

If I were at all tempted to give things a go it would likely be working on shotguns. Nobody out there is looking for a wrench to modify their Glock, and plenty have cigar boxes filled with old revolvers, but the guy who hunts with a shotgun will generally pay to have it fixed. Still the...

    Building a 10/22

I always try to keep people here rather than steering to another site, but John Picher has penned a good number of tips on modifying the 10/22 from stock. I realize that is not your stated purpose but those posts provide a wealth of insight as to inadequacies, giving you a heads up on what to...

Building a lighter AR didn't work out so well...

A pair here built by my daughter and me, both .223 Wylde, forged uppers/lowers (Anderson and SOLGW), 16” BA pencil profile, 10.5” pencil. One is standard lo pro, the other an adjustable (JP), aluminum minimalist stock vs SBC brace, both wear 15” aluminum handguards from Phase 5, A2 hider on the...

    Mystery Tool!!!

That’s the sort of thing Loon will definitely need sooner or later. I picture every firearm on the island passing across his workbench at some point.

"Upgrades" to a Savage Axis (not an Axis II)

You’ve got an upgraded trigger coming so I definitely feel glass is next. The most portable piece in the equation is a good scope. No matter if the rifle goes South or you trade up later, we are in a revolutionary age where good, feature rich optics are plentiful. Spend what you can there...

How Many of You Shorten Your Stock to Customize LOP?

This. I wonder how many would be kept if they did fit? It’s not exactly bespoke but it need not be a hindrance. My first trigger pull was a single shot 12ga, no pad, at age 8. I retired from shooting that very day but was lured back by a BuckMark. Praise the Lord for rimfires!

Do you own it for resale value or for utility? If it doesn’t suit you, fix it posthaste.

Building a lighter AR didn't work out so well...

You won’t ever shave 2 lbs off that rifle. You could swap out the upper and lower receivers for high dollar lite versions and save a few ounces, swap the bolt for said same and drop a few more. Use a truly minimalist stock, AGB, and find a shorter barrel and lighter can, swap that MI for a CF...

Want to have a 1911 milled for an optic. Where should I go?

If it were mine I would chance reaching out to a few professionals in the industry like Joe Chambers. Chambers Customs saw well past traditional form with the 1911 and embraced potential early on. I imagine an email with an introduction to who you are would get a response. Best of luck.

    Alchemy Custom Weaponry (thoughts)

I’ll likely never pony up the money for an ACW proper but I know Rob is a very accomplished pistolsmith and the work he did on my 1911s was transformative. Whether the company is continuing to function at that level is something to consider but I’d bet he left a solid team in place.

    It's called a "Heal"?

    It's called a "Heal"?

When I heard “stock rest” I was thinking buttstock and in reading other responses I realize this is far more open to interpretation than my tiny brain allotted for. These attach to a standard sling stud, eliminating the need for a rear bag.

    10/22 takedown optics

Glad you’re feeling better and best of luck on the new optic. For my son’s 10/22 TD we swapped between an old Nikon 2-7x and a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot. In the end he preferred the scope but honestly there are boards of new inexpensive scopes that easily best Nikon.
