You're exactly right for the reasons you stated. Shorter pull and reset, generally lighter weight trigger break = higher rate of fire.

I would suggest the GSG-1911 .22. I have thousands of rounds through mine, and you've got accuracy, reliability, and the timeless feel and look of the 1911 platform. Plus, it's compatible with many 1911 aftermarket parts, if your grandson wants to learn a little gunsmithing.

I am a big fan of muzzle brakes, especially on select-fire rifles. Over the weekend, I converted an AMD-65 project build to select-fire, and topped off the muzzle with a big, ugly, ray-gun looking brake, but it does a heck of a job keeping the bullets on target. Check the vid to see what I mean...

Ha! I can't steer you away from the P-07, either. Great-shooting pistol, with smooth recoil and they're fast to get back onto the target for followup shots. My only gripe is the expense of the extra mags.

My current favorite is shooting A500 steel silhouettes with my suppressed firearms. Their quieted action makes the loud ping of lead-on-steel all the more satisfying!

I think the Calico models are pretty horrible-looking. Their design looks like a throwback to some bad 50's sci-fi movies.... like some kind of martian ray gun, haha.

You could use a hack saw. Just make sure your cut starts true and perpendicular to the barrel. It'd be helpful to make some kind of clamp-on jig to guide your blade. The brake! The Mosin is loud by itself, but the brake just takes it to a whole new level, haha. I have the barrel down to 21", I think.

Count me as another vote for the Bushnell TRS-25. I love that thing. I run a few of them on stuff from .22 to 7.62x54. The usually run around $90 on amazon.com.

You can't go wrong with Geissele, but for around $100, I have become a big fan of the Rock River 2-stage 3.5lb setup. I run mine very hard, and has withstood several thousand rounds with no issues.
