    Are older Rugers better quality?

Like anything, it varies. But I have probably owned about 10 "Sixes". Most were average for fitting and trigger pulls, with the triggers getting better with use. I have had one stainless gun that was poorly fitted and needed diagnosis and correction, and one that is beautifully put together...

The Security-Six.S&W 19/66: Did Progress Kill Them?

My agency issued the 3" Speed Six for years. The 110 gr. .357 load was used for a while, and then we went to the 125 gr. load. At the time I was the range officer. We fired the 72 round course of fire with full loads, and usually some additional firing with pepper poppers, etc. as well. I put a...

    Fast questions : AR-15 bags

Cheaper Than Dirt has a dandy case for the M4gery; well designed, well made, for about $47 last I knew. I had a Brownell's carry case that I was not that impressed with (very unusual for them) and ordered the CTD on a hunch. It's first class; I ordered a couple more as gifts in addition to mine.

    Recommend a BHP barrel

I got one from Brownell's a few years back to replace a somewhat pitted one in an otherwise pretty decent Inglis BHP. I think it was made by Olympic Arms; it dropped right in and has shot and functioned well right from the start. I think they are still available.

    Ruger 1911 coming soon??

I'm 1911'd up pretty well, but it would be interesting to see what they might come up with. I just don't know if they could bring themselves to make a plain vanilla classic 1911 without multiple redundant safetys and paragraphs of helpful hints all over the thing. However I recently got a .44...

What is your most faithful pistol?

Have been using a Ruger Security Six/Service Six constantly since 1981, first as a duty weapon and into retirement. Both guns were shot enough to require barrel replacements and refinishing, and both have always percolated 100%. If it absolutely has to work, those are the ones.

    What's the Best Pocket Pistol?

Smith 442/any of the "hammerless" J frames.

    Aimpoint T-1 vs ACOG TA33R

I have a 1.5X24 compact ACOG on an AR carbine, and a 3x30 compact ACOG on an MIA. I consider the carbine a 125 yard weapon, and the 1.5 with battle zero allows hits out to 300. At the distances you are speaking of 1.5 power will work. The 3X is better at distance, but neither scope is what you...

    .45 ACP for Carbines

No, but I have a #4 Mk.1* with a bad barrel that would be a candidate for that. Where did you get the kit? As to the .45 ACP, I've been loading it for a long time. I think that the best you could do would be a +P 185 grain JHP. I would personally be leery of brewing up some super-special loads...

    Security-Six Problem

Is the "catch" enough to interrupt or interfere with a proper DA pull or just a mild stacking? There are a LOT of things that can create this. However if you do not get it with the cyl. out it is pretty much a cylinder/hand issue. As I recall the hand is supposed to sit back in the window cut...

    Rem Oil Opinions

Ed's Red and any light machine lubricating oil. I still have some of the surplus Navy oil I paid 50 cents a gallon for years ago. The guns can't read the hype on the container anyway.

Armed Pilot who had accidental discharge gets his job back

TSA never wanted the program and has thrown countless roadblocks in its way. It's a wonder than any pilots participate at all. TSA's management is 100% hoplophobe and that's all there is to it.

Talk me out of a Ruger Vaquero...

Bought one about 2-3 years ago when they first came out--a 4 5/8" stainless in .45 Colt. We have had/have 2 Old Vaqueros, Old Blackhawks, NM Blackhawks, NM medium frame Blackhawks (50th Anniversary .357 and .44 Spl.) so we have something to compare to. I like the New Vaq A LOT. It's very well...

    Colt Lightweight Commander Durability?

I used one for a work gun (and IPSC) back in the late 70s. I shot a full power lead 200 gr SWC load at 900 fps most of the time, but didn't have a particularly high round count through the gun. The frame cracked at the dust cover. I eventually found a new LW frame for it but it was never as...

dumb question - do soldiers go deaf?

When I started pistol shooting circa 1959, my ears would ring for 3 days after a match. Luckily those Clark ear protectors came along shortly afterwards and I got one of the first pair. Still have them, with replacement seals! Spent 4 yrs on the flight line pulling security in the Air Force but...

So, it's 1910, what would you choose to carry?

A 1905 Colt .45 auto is tempting, but I could get along nicely with a Colt SA 4 3/4" in .45 Colt. Could also be comfortable with a 5" Triple Lock Target. Would have to check but I think there were some pretty wad-cutter like bullet designs available from Lyman in .44 caliber those days. I...

    '61 Navy Info

I got Uberti's military model (stock cuts, screws, steel backstrap) from Midway about 6 yrs ago for $195. I had prior experience with a 2nd gen. Colt 1851 and original '51 and '60. I have been very pleased with the Uberti's quality and finish. I would rate it with the 2nd gen. Colt. NONE of...

    S&W customer service

A few years ago I picked up a minty M66-2 made around 1972. It consistently shot seriously left (which I do not do with any other DAs). I finally sent it in to S&W in July asking them to examine it for any discrepancies. It came back the other day with some cryptic notations claiming it was...

    Ruger Speed Six?

I took the Ruger armorer's course on them. They're good solid guns, practically indestructible, and Ruger still sells parts and services them. A neglected stainless gun like that one should be just fine. I picked a blued one up in rough shape some years back for $89 and the bore was ok. A...

The Trijicon ACOG, is it worth it?

Put a 1.5 x 24 Compact on my M4gery about 3 years ago as irons and senior citizen status don't go together well anymore. Magic. Would have loved it on my M16 in 1966...I consider the M4gery a 200 yd weapon so the 1.5 is adequate and plenty quick. If this optic would have been around in 1990 I...
